Jack Wilshere looks set to take over Plymouth Argyle’s managerial role after guiding Norwich City as interim boss in the Championship

Just weeks after wrapping up the Championship season as Norwich City’s interim boss, Jack Wilshere could be heading straight into his next managerial challenge — and this time, it might be a permanent one.

The 32-year-old is now leading the race to take over as manager of Plymouth Argyle, a club facing a rebuild in League One following their recent relegation.

Plymouth on the Hunt After Another Managerial Exit

Plymouth are on the lookout for a new head coach after a turbulent few months at Home Park.

Their most recent boss, Miron Muslic, left the role after just four months in charge to join German side Schalke — a move that clearly left the club frustrated.

In a pointed statement, Plymouth revealed they had “reluctantly” allowed Muslic to pursue talks with the 2. Bundesliga team.

The Austrian manager reportedly wanted to be closer to his family, after spending four years working away from home.

However, Argyle weren’t pleased with how it unfolded, saying there had been “regular communication” post-season and “repeated verbal promises” from Muslic that he was committed to leading them back to the Championship.

His sudden exit just months into a three-and-a-half-year deal left the club feeling disappointed — especially after having already begun making signings in preparation for the new season.

Wilshere Emerges as the Favourite to Take Over

Now, attention has turned to who will lead Plymouth through the next chapter. A handful of names have been floating around — including David Wagner, Ian Evatt, Des Buckingham, Adin Osmanbasic and Jim Goodwin.

But Jack Wilshere is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to land the job, and his name carries weight not just because of his playing days, but because of his fast-developing coaching reputation.

Interestingly, the role Wilshere might take over was once held by his former England teammate, Wayne Rooney.

Rooney lasted only 25 games in charge before being dismissed on New Year’s Eve, having won just five matches.

A Quick Rise from Arsenal Youth Coach to Championship Dugout

Wilshere hasn’t wasted time moving up the coaching ladder.

In fact, he jumped into management almost immediately after retiring from professional football in July 2022.

Just four days after hanging up his boots, he took charge of Arsenal’s Under-18s.

His first season was impressive — leading the young Gunners to an FA Youth Cup final.

That success helped boost his profile, and in April 2025, he made a big leap by joining Norwich City as interim manager for the final two games of the season.

Making a Statement at Norwich

Though it was a short stint, Wilshere made the most of it.

Norwich had been struggling, but under his leadership, they managed to stop the rot with a solid 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough — snapping a three-match losing streak.

He followed that up with a 4-2 win over Cardiff City in the season finale, earning praise for his tactical clarity and the energy he brought to the dugout.

It was a small sample, but it showed promise — and clearly caught the attention of clubs like Plymouth.

What’s Next for Wilshere?

Wilshere hasn’t hidden the fact that he’s determined to build a career in management.

And with Plymouth offering the chance to lead a historic club back to the Championship, this could be the perfect next move.

If he does get the nod, it’ll be a big test — but also a big opportunity to establish himself as more than just a former star on the pitch.

Stay tuned — because Jack Wilshere’s coaching journey might just be about to kick into full gear in League One.
