Itumeleng Khune faces uncertain future as Kaizer Chiefs opt for new goalkeeper in upcoming season

It seems that the winds of change are blowing for Itumeleng Khune, the veteran goalkeeper who has been a loyal servant to Kaizer Chiefs for many years. Despite his unwavering commitment to the team, the 37-year-old has found himself on the sidelines this season after the club decided not to renew his playing contract. While Chiefs have offered Khune a non-playing role, he remains determined to continue his playing career.

Shongwe’s Advice: Time to Move On

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, William Shongwe, has some advice for Khune: if the club isn’t willing to extend his contract, it’s time to move on. Shongwe believes Khune still has plenty to offer and shouldn’t hang up his gloves just yet. “If they don’t extend, without a doubt, Khune should leave Chiefs,” Shongwe told FARPost. He emphasized that there are several teams in the Premiership where Khune could still make a significant impact.

A Leader on and off the Field

Shongwe isn’t just talking about Khune’s ability to stop goals; he sees Khune as a complete package. “In Khune, you don’t just have a goalie. You have a leader; you buy several things in one. He’s got charisma and leadership skills, and he still has the ability to play,” Shongwe explained. He also pointed out that Khune’s presence could boost team morale and instill a winning mentality among the players.

Too Early to Step Aside

Shongwe also believes that it’s too early for Khune to transition to a non-playing role. He referenced other goalkeepers like Andre Arendse, who played well into their 40s, and Denis Onyango, who is still playing at 38. “It’s a question of whether Khune wants to put in the work or expects his reputation to carry him,” Shongwe added, emphasizing that hard work and the right mindset are key to staying at the top.

A New Keeper at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs have already signed a new goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, who many believe is Khune’s successor. With Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen also in the squad, it seems unlikely that Khune will find himself back between the posts for Amakhosi anytime soon. However, Shongwe remains optimistic that Khune can rise to the top again, provided he’s willing to put in the effort.

What’s Next for Khune?

As Kaizer Chiefs prepare to kick off their Betway Premiership campaign against Marumo Gallants next month, the big question remains: where will Khune go next? With his experience, leadership, and undeniable talent, it’s clear that Khune still has a lot to offer—whether it’s with another team in the Premiership or even abroad. Only time will tell where this legendary goalkeeper’s journey will take him next.
