Former Jeopardy! contestant Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena has been arrested in North Carolina on 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to court records obtained by the Daily Mail.
DeSena, 44, was arrested on Friday, October 23, approximately three months after pleading guilty to two felony charges of secret peeping.
An arrest warrant alleges that the latest charges involve his possession of sexually explicit images and videos depicting children. Court records list November 19, 2025, as the date of the alleged offences.
The software developer from Raleigh was arrested while serving a 60-month probation sentence imposed following his earlier guilty pleas.
Judge Denies Bond After Initial Court Appearance
Following his arrest, DeSena was booked into Wake County Jail and held without bail.
A judge subsequently denied his bond on Monday, and he remains in custody, according to court records.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on November 11.
The Daily Mail said it had contacted representatives of the Raleigh Police Department for comment.
Earlier Guilty Plea Involved Hidden Cameras in Rental Property
DeSena pleaded guilty in July 2026 to two felony counts of secret peeping stemming from an incident involving concealed cameras at a rental property in Corolla, North Carolina.
He was arrested in December 2025 after allegedly installing a camera in the bathroom and bedroom of a property occupied by an unsuspecting victim.
According to the indictment, DeSena unlawfully placed a photographic recording device in a bathroom with the intention of capturing images of another person without consent.
Prosecutors said the incident came to light on October 10, 2025, when a woman visiting the property for a wedding discovered two black USB wall chargers containing hidden cameras.
The case was reported by WAVY, which cited details presented during a court hearing.
DeSena Turned Himself In After Camera Allegations
DeSena surrendered to authorities on December 1, 2025, following the investigation into the concealed cameras.
He was released two days later after posting $5,000 bail.
The case subsequently resulted in his guilty pleas to the two felony secret-peeping charges in July 2026. The court imposed a five-year probationary sentence.
His latest arrest occurred while that probation sentence was still in effect.
Three-Time Jeopardy! Winner Competed in 2024 and 2025
DeSena first appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy! on November 11, 2024, winning that episode and returning to win again the following day.
He lost on November 13, ending his initial winning run.
In January 2025, he returned to compete in the show’s Champions Wildcard tournament and reached the semifinals.
His television appearances brought him recognition as a three-time winner before the criminal cases against him.
Former Jeopardy! Champion Winston Nguyen Also Received Prison Sentence
DeSena’s case follows that of another former Jeopardy! winner, Winston Nguyen, a New York City mathematics teacher who was sentenced to seven years in prison in March 2025.
Nguyen, who won on the programme in 2014, was arrested in June 2024 after being accused of using online accounts to solicit explicit images from students.
The allegations included requests sent through Snapchat to students at private schools in Brooklyn, some of whom were as young as 13.
Students at Saint Ann’s School and other private schools began reporting the solicitations in 2022. The district attorney’s office informed Saint Ann’s in February 2024 that an investigation into an anonymous account was underway.
Nguyen had previously been given another opportunity to teach at Saint Ann’s in 2020 after a fraud conviction. His subsequent arrest in 2024 prompted renewed scrutiny of the school’s handling of the matter.
