The Israel Defense Forces says it killed Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Muhammad Nagar, a Palestinian it identifies as a member of Hamas’ military wing who allegedly entered Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack.
The Israeli military announced Nagar’s death on Thursday, October 1, saying he had recently been involved in preparing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers while working to restore Hamas’ military capabilities.
Israeli Military Confirms Strike in Southern Gaza
According to the IDF, Nagar was killed in an Israeli strike carried out on Wednesday in the southern Gaza Strip.
Reports citing the military placed the operation in the Khan Younis area. The IDF said precautions were taken before the attack to reduce the risk to civilians, including the use of precision weapons and aerial surveillance.
The military did not disclose extensive operational details surrounding the strike or publicly provide evidence in its announcement substantiating all of the allegations made against Nagar.
IDF Links Nagar to October 7 Attack
One of the Israeli military’s central claims is that Nagar crossed into Israeli territory during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 assault.
The IDF identified him as a member of Hamas’ armed wing but did not assign him a specific military rank in its announcement.
Israeli authorities have accused Hamas fighters who participated in the October 7 attack of continuing to play roles in the group’s military operations during the subsequent Gaza conflict.
Dispute Emerges Over Nagar Being Described as Journalist
Nagar’s death also generated competing descriptions of his role.
The IDF said that after he was killed, he was presented as a journalist without reference to what Israel says was his membership in Hamas’ military wing.
Palestinian reports identified Nagar as a media worker, with some accounts describing him as a presenter for Radio Quran. The Israeli military maintains that those descriptions omitted his alleged Hamas affiliation.
The available reports do not independently establish the full nature of Nagar’s alleged military activities, and no detailed evidence supporting the IDF’s claims about his Hamas membership or October 7 participation was included in the military’s public statement.
Israel Accuses Nagar of Planning New Attacks
The IDF further alleged that Nagar had recently been involved in advancing attacks against Israeli civilians and Israeli troops.
According to the military, he was also working to restore capabilities lost by Hamas during the conflict.
Israel described those activities as a systematic violation of the ceasefire and said the strike was conducted because Nagar continued to represent a security threat.
IDF Says Strike Was Intended to Remove Threat
The Israeli military framed Nagar’s killing as a targeted operation aimed at preventing further attacks.
The IDF said its forces continue to act against individuals it considers immediate threats despite the ceasefire arrangements governing operations in Gaza.
Israeli forces remain deployed in parts of the territory under the terms of the ceasefire, while allegations of violations continue to fuel tensions between the sides.
Killing Comes Alongside Other Israeli Operations Against Hamas Figures
Nagar’s death was announced as Israel reported additional strikes against alleged Hamas operatives in Gaza.
In a separate operation, the IDF said it killed Ammar Mahmoud Muhammad Sharafi, whom it identified as a Hamas military-wing platoon commander. Israel similarly accused Sharafi of preparing attacks and attempting to rebuild Hamas’ capabilities.
The latest operations underline the continuing fragility of the ceasefire as Israel maintains that it will target Hamas members it considers active threats, while disputes persist over the status and activities of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes.
