The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has strongly condemned a violent attack on an emergency medical services (EMS) team after two paramedics were allegedly held hostage for several hours while responding to an emergency call.
The incident has renewed concerns about the increasing dangers faced by frontline healthcare workers in the province.
Emergency Call Turns Into Four-Hour Ordeal
According to the department, the terrifying incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday near Nkwalini Store on the R34 outside Eshowe.
The EMS crew had been dispatched to assist with an emergency when armed suspects reportedly ambushed them.
Instead of reaching a patient in need, the paramedics were robbed of their personal belongings and forced into captivity.
The department said the crew remained in the hands of their captors for approximately four hours before eventually being released.
Victims Forced to Buy Alcohol for Captors
Authorities revealed that the attackers did more than rob the emergency workers.
The suspects allegedly forced the EMS crew to drive them to at least two taverns, where the paramedics were compelled to purchase alcohol using their own bank cards.
Although neither crew member suffered physical injuries during the ordeal, the department said the emotional impact of the incident is expected to be severe.
Health Officials Warn of Growing Threat
The department described the attack as part of an increasingly worrying pattern of violence targeting emergency responders across KwaZulu-Natal.
Officials said healthcare workers regularly place themselves in dangerous situations to save lives, yet they are increasingly becoming victims of criminal activity while carrying out their duties.
The department warned that such attacks not only threaten the safety of EMS personnel but also undermine the delivery of emergency medical services to communities that depend on rapid response during life-threatening situations.
Call for Communities to Help Stop the Violence
Condemning the incident in the strongest terms, health officials said it was deeply troubling that emergency workers sent to assist communities were instead being exploited and attacked.
The department noted that in many parts of the world, including conflict zones, emergency personnel are protected to ensure they can perform their life-saving responsibilities without fear.
Officials urged communities to reject violence against healthcare workers and assist authorities by providing information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
Police Investigation Underway
The incident has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), with the department expressing confidence that those involved will be identified and prosecuted.
Health officials appealed to anyone with information about the attack to report it to the nearest police station, saying those responsible must face the full force of the law.
