This evening in Canelands, Kwazulu Natal, a passenger alighting from a car during a hijacking was shot and killed.

At 23:50, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call from a male (Saturday). A person was seen laying on the ground near the Canelands Bridge going to Hazelmere/Mhlasini, according to information obtained.

When a Reaction Officer arrived on the scene, he discovered a male standing next to a man’s body. The traumatized man claimed that he and a passenger in a white Kia were returning from a funeral in Cottonlands, KZN. A white GWM bakkie obstructed his path of passage when he paused near a fork on the road damaged by recent flooding, according to the driver. Several suspects brandished firearms at him and demanded that he get out of the bakkie. He was shot when he alighted from the plane. The bakkie was then taken by force (registration unknown).

The passenger was found laying in a pool of blood by paramedics who arrived quickly. He was certified dead on the spot after sustaining a single entrance wound to the front of his head.

The deceased’s identify could not be revealed until his next of kin had been notified.
