Elle Macpherson has recently opened up about a personal battle she kept hidden for years.
The supermodel, now 60 and over two decades sober, shared her experiences with alcohol addiction in her new memoir, Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself.
The book was released in Australia this week, and Elle has been candid about her past struggles, particularly how she used to drink heavily after putting her children to bed.
Facing the Truth on Radio
Elle discussed her addiction in detail during an appearance on the Carrie & Tommy radio show.
She revealed that she would drink shots of vodka until she ‘passed out’ while her sons Flynn, 26, and Cy, 21, were asleep.
Host Carrie Bickmore asked Elle if anyone knew about her drinking habits.
Elle admitted that while she didn’t actively hide it, it was simply a part of her life at the time.
She also mentioned attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings regularly during that period.
Struggles with Alcohol and Its Impact
Elle shared that her addiction involved extreme measures, including making herself vomit multiple times to rid her body of alcohol.
Reflecting on her past behavior, she laughed at the absurdity of thinking vomiting could eliminate the alcohol from her system.
She attributed her battle with alcoholism and the compulsive vomiting to a need to control her external environment to find internal peace.
Controversial Cancer Treatment Choices
Elle’s memoir also touches on her approach to treating breast cancer, which has sparked controversy.
Seven years ago, Elle was diagnosed with HER2 positive oestrogen receptive intraductal carcinoma.
Instead of following conventional treatments recommended by doctors, she chose a holistic approach, enlisting a team of alternative specialists and spending time in Phoenix, Arizona for treatment.
Elle’s decision to forgo standard medical advice, including a mastectomy and chemotherapy, in favor of holistic methods has been criticized.
Her treatment included a range of alternative practitioners, including Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a discredited antivaxxer who was struck off in 2010 for fraudulent research.
Reactions and Criticism
Elle has recently told Women’s Weekly that she is now in clinical remission, with no current signs of cancer.
However, her decision to pursue unconventional treatment methods has faced backlash.
Many fans and medical professionals have criticized her for promoting what they consider dangerous therapies.
They argue that her approach could potentially endanger others battling cancer.
Looking Ahead
Despite the criticism, Elle’s journey through addiction and cancer treatment highlights her personal struggles and the choices she made in her quest for health and well-being.
As she continues to share her story, the conversation around holistic versus conventional treatment methods remains a topic of debate.
