FIFA Clears Folarin Balogun to Face Belgium After Suspending World Cup Match Ban

Roland Barthes

The United States men’s national soccer team has received a major boost ahead of its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash with Belgium after FIFA suspended striker Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension, making him available for Monday’s knockout fixture.

The decision overturns what would normally have been a mandatory absence following Balogun’s dismissal in the United States’ previous match.

Red Card Had Triggered Automatic Suspension

Balogun, one of the United States’ standout performers at this year’s World Cup with three goals, was shown a red card during last week’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina after committing a foul on an opposing defender.

Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card automatically results in a one-match suspension, which initially ruled the forward out of the encounter with Belgium.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee reviewed the matter and decided to suspend the automatic ban.

FIFA Places Striker on One-Year Probation

In a statement, FIFA confirmed that Balogun will now remain eligible to play while being placed on probation for one year instead of serving the suspension.

The governing body did not provide further details explaining why the disciplinary sanction had been modified, but the ruling allows one of the United States’ key attacking players to feature in one of the team’s most important matches of the tournament.

Belgium Football Association Questions Decision

The Royal Belgian Football Association reacted with surprise to FIFA’s decision, describing itself as “astonished” by the reversal.

In a statement, the organization said it is examining all available options to protect what it considers the legitimate interests of competing teams and uphold the principles of fair play during both the current FIFA World Cup and future editions of the competition.

Belgian officials indicated they are assessing possible responses following FIFA’s ruling.

Trump Welcomes FIFA’s Reversal

US President Donald Trump publicly praised FIFA’s decision shortly after the announcement.

Posting on social media, Trump thanked the governing body for what he described as correcting an injustice.

According to a report by The New York Times, Trump also personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino last week and urged him to reconsider Balogun’s suspension.

The newspaper cited three individuals familiar with the conversation.

United States Focuses on Belgium Showdown

The US men’s national team welcomed the outcome, saying it accepted the ruling by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee and was pleased that Balogun would be available for selection.

Team officials added that their attention is now fully focused on preparing for the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle while thanking supporters for their continued backing throughout the tournament.

Balogun’s availability is expected to strengthen the United States’ attacking options as it seeks a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Similar FIFA Decision Has Previous Precedent

Although uncommon, FIFA has previously overturned automatic suspensions in exceptional circumstances.

Earlier this year, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to avoid serving a suspension at the start of the World Cup despite receiving a red card during a qualifying match.

That earlier case demonstrated the governing body’s willingness, under certain circumstances, to reconsider disciplinary sanctions before major tournament fixtures.
