FIFA has overturned the immediate effect of Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension, making the United States striker eligible for Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium in a decision that has sparked widespread controversy across international football.
The unexpected ruling came after reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the disciplinary sanction imposed on the American forward.
Trump Reportedly Requested Review of Suspension
According to reports from The New York Times, Trump telephoned Infantino last week and asked FIFA to reconsider Balogun’s automatic suspension following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1.
Shortly after FIFA announced its decision, Trump publicly welcomed the outcome on his Truth Social platform, describing it as the correction of what he called “a great injustice.”
The U.S. president has developed a close relationship with Infantino during his second term in office, fueling debate over whether political influence played a role in the disciplinary review.
FIFA Invokes Rare Disciplinary Provision
In a statement released on Sunday, FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension had been suspended under Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code.
Rather than serving the mandatory one-match ban immediately, the punishment has been placed on probation for one year.
If Balogun commits another offence of similar seriousness during that period, the suspension will automatically be enforced alongside any additional disciplinary sanctions.
The decision effectively clears the striker to feature against Belgium despite his dismissal earlier in the tournament.
Belgium Questions Legality of FIFA Decision
The Royal Belgian Football Association responded with a strongly worded statement, expressing surprise at FIFA’s interpretation of its own rules and announcing it is exploring all possible legal avenues.
Belgian officials argued that FIFA’s World Cup regulations clearly state that any player sent off with a direct or indirect red card must automatically miss the team’s next match.
The federation also cited Article 10.5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 competition regulations and previous tournament guidance circulated to participating nations, maintaining that the automatic suspension cannot be bypassed.
