Veteran actress Felicity Kendal has shared an emotional insight into life after the death of her longtime partner Michael Rudman, admitting that learning to move forward without him changed every part of her daily life.

Michael, the acclaimed theatre director and Tony Award winner, died in April 2023 at the age of 84.

Now, three years later, Felicity says the pain of losing someone so deeply woven into her everyday routine remains difficult, but she has gradually learned to focus more on treasured memories than overwhelming sadness.

Speaking candidly in the July edition of Prima Magazine, the 79-year-old actress explained how grief initially consumed her family’s world before time slowly helped them rebuild a sense of normality.

She described the first year after Michael’s death as especially disorientating, saying the absence of a loved one forces a person to rethink their entire identity and routine.

According to Felicity, losing a partner can leave someone feeling incomplete, as though a part of themselves has disappeared alongside the person they loved.

Over time, however, she said she came to realise there was still room to create a new chapter in life, even after devastating loss.

“Everyday Changes” After Losing Someone Close

The actress explained that Michael had been adored not only by her, but by their children and wider family circle, which helped them support one another through the darkest period.

Felicity said grief quietly affects every moment of daily life because the person who once shared ordinary routines is suddenly gone.

Even when people attempt to carry on normally, she admitted the emotional impact is impossible to fully hide.

She also revealed that memories of another painful loss — the death of her sister years earlier — helped shape the way she now approaches grief.

Rather than becoming trapped in sorrow, Felicity said she reminds herself how precious life is and believes the best way to honour loved ones is by continuing to live fully instead of wasting time dwelling only on sadness.

The actress described the healing process as a long emotional journey, adding that reaching a place where joyful memories outweigh painful ones does not happen overnight.

A Romance That Began in the Theatre World

Felicity and Michael first met in 1974 while working in theatre circles.

At the time, Michael was still married to Veronica Bennett.

Their relationship developed gradually after he later cast Felicity in a West End production he was directing. Michael would eventually recount the beginning of their romance in his memoir, I Joke Too Much.

In the book, he recalled being immediately captivated by Felicity when he first saw her, even while working alongside other major stars of the era including Tom Courtenay and Michael Gambon.

Michael explained that once their relationship began, the pair kept it hidden from public view for some time.

He wrote that maintaining secrecy became especially complicated because they were both parents and were also working together professionally at the National Theatre.

Marriage, Separation and a Reunion Years Later

Felicity eventually divorced her first husband, actor Drewe Henley, and married Michael in 1983.

Their marriage lasted seven years before ending in 1991 after Felicity began a relationship with celebrated playwright Tom Stoppard, who also separated from his wife during that period.

Despite the highly publicised split, Felicity and Michael later found their way back to one another. They reunited in 1998 and remained together for the rest of his life, although they never remarried.

The couple shared one son together, Jacob.

Felicity Previously Spoke Honestly About Relationships

Several years before Michael’s death, Felicity offered a rare and frank reflection on relationships and infidelity during a 2019 interview.

She admitted that throughout her life she moved from one relationship to another, occasionally with overlap between partners, but insisted she never viewed dishonesty positively.

The actress said she would never encourage infidelity because it ultimately involves deception, though she acknowledged many people experience complicated relationships at some stage in their lives.

Michael’s Health Battle Before His Death

Two years before he died, Michael faced a major health scare after contracting Covid-19 in 2021.

He reportedly spent two weeks in intensive care, leaving Felicity and their family terrified during the height of pandemic restrictions.

Looking back on that period, Felicity described the fear and helplessness she experienced while being unable to visit him freely in hospital.

She said the uncertainty surrounding a loved one’s condition during the pandemic created a kind of emotional distress unlike anything she had experienced before.

At the time, she admitted she was especially frightened because Michael was already in his eighties and therefore considered highly vulnerable.

Actress Appears on Prima Cover as She Shares Personal Reflections

Felicity appears on the cover of the July 2026 issue of Prima Magazine wearing a sophisticated pinstripe suit while opening up about love, bereavement and resilience.

Although the actress acknowledged that grief never completely disappears, she said she now tries to centre her thoughts on the happy memories she shared with Michael rather than the heartbreak left behind after his death.
