Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is closing in on a monumental milestone, scoring two goals against Bournemouth to take him to 98 Premier League strikes.
His brace not only helped City regain second place in the table but also highlighted once again why the Norwegian is considered one of the most lethal forwards in world football.
Guardiola Voices Frustration Over Refereeing Standards
Despite the victory, Pep Guardiola’s attention quickly turned to officiating.
He was visibly irked after Tyler Adams’ equaliser, which came from a corner where goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma appeared to be fouled.
The goal stood despite City’s protests, with referee Anthony Taylor and VAR official Paul Tierney allowing the decision to stand.
Guardiola didn’t hold back in his post-match comments, questioning the broader standards of refereeing during his ten years in charge at City.
“An unbelievable goal for the official,” Guardiola remarked.
“I’ve spent a decade here and, despite everything, I’m proud of what we’ve achieved.
It’s been an incredible journey, so good.”
Guardiola Confronts Referee But Avoids Formal Complaints
Guardiola confirmed he spoke to Taylor directly after the game but insisted he has never formally contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to question decisions.
“I don’t have time to waste calling anyone,” he explained. “I just asked him directly: tell me if it’s a foul or not because I’m waiting.
They’re brave here at the Etihad. In the past, other top managers might have called them.
I don’t. I know the referees, I know them perfectly after ten years, I know what’s going on in this stadium.”
Haaland Already Matching Legends
While Guardiola’s focus on refereeing grabbed headlines, he also praised Haaland’s continued brilliance.
The Norwegian has now scored 13 of City’s 20 league goals this season, and Guardiola believes his striker is operating at the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
“Has he reached that level? Look at his numbers. Oh my God, yes, he’s at that level,” Guardiola said.
“Cristiano and Messi did it for 15 years. Messi still scores in MLS, Cristiano in Saudi Arabia – this guy is up there.
Look at how he shoots the ball – it’s like he’s saying, I’m going to score.”
A Star Focused on Improvement
Guardiola also highlighted Haaland’s mentality, describing him as ambitious but grounded.
“I’m tough sometimes with him,” he added. “He’s open-minded, down to earth, and wants to be better every day.
That’s why he’s scoring, that’s why he’s already at the top level.”
With just two goals needed to join the Premier League’s 100-club, Haaland looks set to continue making history while City chase another domestic title.
