Chelsea’s relentless pursuit of their sixth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) title gained momentum after a thrilling 2-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday, thanks to a dramatic 91st-minute winner by Erin Cuthbert.
The goal, a diving header, restored Chelsea’s eight-point lead at the top of the table, with just five games left in the season.
Cuthbert’s Late Heroics Secure Crucial Win
With the clock ticking down at the Etihad Stadium, Cuthbert powered home the decisive goal to secure Chelsea’s comeback victory.
The midfielder’s joy was palpable as she revealed, “The gaffer didn’t tell me to do that! I’ve been challenging myself to get in the box more, and when you’re that close to goal, any touch will guide it in.”
Her goal was the highlight of a match that saw Chelsea recover from a first-half deficit, where Manchester City had initially taken the lead through a stunning individual effort from Kerolin.
The Brazilian dashed into the box and slotted the ball through Millie Bright’s legs to give City a 1-0 lead.
Contentious Moment Adds to City’s Frustrations
Manchester City had a chance to double their lead just moments after Kerolin’s goal, when she was fouled on the edge of the box.
Jess Park pounced on the loose ball and curled it into the top corner, but referee Kirsty Dowle had already blown for the foul before the ball left Park’s foot.
Though City manager Nick Cushing was informed of the officials’ mistake at halftime, it offered little solace for the team, who were left to rue missed opportunities.
Chelsea’s Comeback and Dominance at the Top
The second half saw Chelsea battle back, with Aggie Beever-Jones leveling the score in the 49th minute.
Cuthbert’s late strike sealed the victory, leaving Chelsea with a commanding position in the race for the WSL title.
With just five games remaining, Chelsea’s pursuit of their sixth consecutive title is looking more promising than ever.
