Enzo Maresca, the new Chelsea manager, has weighed in on the current situation with Conor Gallagher, shedding light on his thoughts about the midfielder’s future.
Chelsea have cut Gallagher’s holiday short and informed him that he won’t be part of the first-team squad when he returns next Monday.
Despite this, Gallagher is considering staying at the club but is hoping for a long-term contract as part of any potential agreement.
Gallagher, who has been with Chelsea since he was eight years old, even captained the team under Mauricio Pochettino last season. However, the club has been in talks with Atletico Madrid, agreeing on a £33 million transfer fee.
Although that deal seems to be on shaky ground, it highlights Chelsea’s position as Gallagher expresses a strong desire to remain at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca’s Take on the Situation
Following his first win as Chelsea manager, a 3-0 triumph over Club America, Maresca was asked about Gallagher. He responded diplomatically, stating, “Right now, there’s no new update.
The only thing I can say is that he’s been in contact with the club to work out a solution. These kinds of issues come up every summer in football, and usually, things get resolved in the end. Hopefully, that will be the case here too.”
Contract Negotiations and Future Plans
Gallagher was a regular starter for Chelsea last season and even earned a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024. In June, Chelsea offered him a new contract for two years plus an option for a third year after accepting a £57.5 million bid from Aston Villa, which Gallagher turned down.
They’ve since made a similar offer after Atletico Madrid’s interest, but Gallagher’s preference is to stay with a contract that reflects his worth and shows mutual commitment.
Chelsea’s Concerns
Chelsea seems hesitant to offer Gallagher a long-term deal, fearing he might not fit into Maresca’s system.
This reluctance comes as Atletico Madrid pushes for a decision, but Gallagher remains unsure if the move is right for him.
Despite being a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s recent actions suggest they are keen on selling Gallagher now rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires next summer.
