England Shock The Oval in London as Jamie Smith Withdraws Late and James Rew Takes Wicketkeeping Role in Dramatic Test Shake-Up

England have been dealt a late selection headache ahead of the second Test against New Zealand after wicketkeeper Jamie Smith withdrew from the match following the birth of his daughter.

Smith’s second child was born on Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours before play is scheduled to begin at The Oval.

The England management opted to release the 25-year-old from duty so he could remain with his family during the significant occasion.

In a statement, England confirmed that Smith would not take part in the Test, allowing him time away from cricket to be with his partner and newborn child.

Rew Handed Long-Awaited Test Opportunity

The unexpected absence has opened the door for Somerset wicketkeeper-batter James Rew, who will make his Test debut for England.

The 22-year-old will take over wicketkeeping duties and is set to bat at number six in the order.

Rew becomes one of three newcomers included in England’s reshaped side, alongside batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Sonny Baker.

It marks the first time since England’s clash with South Africa at The Oval in 2017 that the national team has fielded three debutants in the same Test XI.

Major Overhaul Following Lord’s Victory

Despite securing a convincing 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord’s, England have made five changes for the second encounter.

Several of those alterations have been forced.

Captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have both been ruled out after becoming unavailable following an incident at a nightclub after the first Test.

Fast bowler Ollie Robinson is also sidelined through injury.

To accommodate the revised balance of the side, spinner Shoaib Bashir has been left out despite featuring in the victory at Lord’s.

As a result, England have called upon Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, Baker, Cox and Rew to strengthen the squad for the Oval contest.

Historic Number of Changes for England

The scale of the reshuffle is notable. England have not made as many as five changes to a team during a home Test series since their final Test against New Zealand in 1999.

Coincidentally, that match was also played at The Oval and was the last time the Black Caps faced England at the London venue before this series.

Familiar Family Circumstances for Smith

This is not the first time Smith has stepped away from international duty to welcome a child.

The wicketkeeper also missed England’s tour of New Zealand in 2024 when his first child was born.

On that occasion, Jordan Cox had been lined up as his replacement, only for a broken thumb sustained during practice to deny him the opportunity.

Now, circumstances have worked differently, with Cox securing a place in the starting XI while Rew has earned the wicketkeeping role.

Rew’s Rise Rewarded

Although Rew was included in England’s squad for the opening Test, he initially remained behind Cox in the selection order when the second Test team was announced earlier this week.

However, Smith’s withdrawal has accelerated his international breakthrough.

The young Somerset player arrives with an impressive domestic record, averaging close to 42 in first-class cricket and already collecting 12 centuries.

In preparation for his debut, Rew spent extensive time working on his wicketkeeping at The Oval under the guidance of England fielding coach Sarah Taylor.

While he will keep wicket, Rew is expected to bat one position above Cox, occupying the number-six slot.

Conway Returns for New Zealand

Smith is not the only player whose family circumstances have affected this series.

New Zealand opener Devon Conway left the tour after the defeat at Lord’s to attend the birth of his child.

Unlike Smith, however, Conway has now returned to the squad and is available for selection in the second Test.

With England unveiling a heavily altered lineup and several fresh faces preparing for their first taste of Test cricket, the match at The Oval promises to begin a new chapter in the series between the two sides.
