Eight migrants wearing designer tracksuits are found by police packed inside a lorry at M25 Waltham Abbey as chaos erupts at the busy truck stop

What began as an ordinary afternoon at a busy truck stop along the M25 quickly turned into a chaotic police scene after officers discovered a group of migrants hiding in the back of a lorry.

The dramatic moment, caught on camera, showed police and paramedics rushing to assist the individuals after the vehicle was stopped at Waltham Abbey on Tuesday.

Shocking Footage Captures the Moment

Newly released footage from the scene revealed a swarm of police cars and vans surrounding the truck stop, with officers carefully helping several men and women climb out of the cramped lorry.

Dressed in branded Adidas tracksuits, the group appeared shaken but unharmed as they were guided down a ladder to safety.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic,” saying the entire area came to a standstill.

“It was a shocking moment,” one onlooker said. “Police swooped in, paramedics were on hand, and everyone just stopped to see what was going on.”

Eight Arrested at the Scene

According to Essex Police, a total of six men and two women were found inside the lorry.

They were checked by ambulance crews before being taken into custody on suspicion of immigration offences.

The driver of the vehicle was also arrested initially on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry into the UK but has since been released without charge.

The police statement confirmed that the arrests took place at the lorry park near Junction 26 of the M25.

“All those involved were assessed by ambulance staff before being taken into custody,” the force said.

Eyewitness Describes “Standstill” at the Truck Stop

A source who witnessed the incident said it wasn’t unusual to see an increase in lorry crossings this time of year, as small boat journeys across the Channel become riskier in colder weather.

“With the autumn and winter months coming in, we often see a rise in people hiding in trucks to get across,” the source noted.

Despite the chaotic atmosphere, the witness added that the migrants seemed to be in good health.

“They were all checked over, asked questions, and seemed fine — just relieved to be out of the lorry.”

Broader Concerns Over Illegal Crossings

The discovery comes as the UK faces mounting pressure over illegal immigration through ports and lorry routes.

Figures obtained by BBC South East show there were nearly 6,000 attempts last year by migrants trying to hide in UK-bound vehicles at Channel ports like Calais, Dunkirk, and Coquelles — a sharp increase from 2023.

Authorities have said these methods are becoming increasingly common as the government intensifies efforts to crack down on small boat crossings.

Connection to Recent Knife Attack Case

The news of the Waltham Abbey arrests also emerged amid reports that a man suspected of fatally stabbing 49-year-old dog walker Wayne Broadhurst in Uxbridge was an Afghan national who had entered the UK illegally by lorry five years ago.

The 22-year-old suspect remains in custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after the attack, which also left two others injured.

Government Pledges Tougher Action on Smuggling

In response to growing public concern, officials say new measures are being rolled out to target people-smuggling operations and tighten border security.

“The government is taking crucial steps to clamp down on all forms of people smuggling,” a spokesperson said earlier this year.

However, with the number of attempts rising — and tragic incidents continuing to make headlines — questions remain about how effective these measures will be as migration routes shift with the changing seasons.

What’s Next?

Police are continuing to question the eight migrants as investigations unfold.

Meanwhile, the discovery on the M25 adds to a troubling trend of desperate journeys and heightened risks as colder weather approaches.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity near lorry parks or service stations, warning that the fight against human smuggling is far from over.
