Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is back in the market, searching for a new club after leaving the Red Devils last summer. Despite his departure, the 33-year-old is still without a team, and his quest continues.
De Gea spent 12 years at Old Trafford before deciding it was time for a fresh challenge.
His contract expired, and despite face-to-face talks, United and De Gea couldn’t reach an agreement.
Erik ten Hag’s doubts about De Gea’s abilities were a significant factor in the decision.
During his contract standoff with United, De Gea married his long-term partner Edurne Garcia. Shortly after their wedding, he announced his departure from the club.
He had joined Manchester United in 2011 for £18.9 million and became one of their highest earners, making £375,000 a week.
A year has passed, and De Gea is still searching for a new club.
He was strongly linked with a move to Italian club Genoa, but the deal fell through due to his high wage demands.
Reports from Sky Sports suggest his wage expectations were unrealistic.
De Gea, who made 545 appearances for Manchester United with 190 clean sheets, is reportedly seeking a contract worth £5 million per year. This equates to around £80,000 per week.
Such high demands have made it difficult for clubs to sign him.
Links with Other Clubs
Several clubs, including Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab and Newcastle, have been rumored to show interest. More recently, Serie A side Fiorentina approached De Gea, but they, too, found his wage demands unacceptable.
There were even suggestions that De Gea might rejoin Manchester United, despite the club signing Andre Onana as his replacement.
Possible Return to Spain
De Gea is reportedly keen on returning to Spain.
Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have shown interest in him. His departure from Manchester United followed a season where he won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for the 2022-23 season.
United’s Statement
United had announced that discussions were open with De Gea about a new deal, but he eventually left.
His departure came after a season of mixed performances, including errors in crucial games against West Ham and Manchester City.
Despite the setbacks, De Gea is determined to find a new club and has been spotted back in training as he continues his search.
