Britain Braces for Beer Chaos as England’s World Cup Clash Could Trigger a Record 42 Million Pint Drinking Frenzy

England’s World Cup clash with Norway is expected to create one of the biggest nights the UK hospitality industry has seen in years, with pubs across England and Wales extending opening hours until 2am to accommodate supporters eager to watch the late-night showdown.

With kick-off scheduled for 10pm, millions of fans are expected to stay awake well into the early hours, turning bars, homes and fan zones into packed viewing venues.

Millions Expected to Tune In Across the Country

An estimated 22 million people—roughly one-third of the UK population—are predicted to watch England’s quarter-final as Thomas Tuchel’s side attempts to move one step closer to World Cup glory.

Television audiences are also expected to soar, with around 17 million viewers forecast to watch on ITV, while another five million could stream the match through ITVX.

If those figures are achieved, it would represent the biggest football audience since the Euro 2024 final attracted a combined 24.2 million viewers.

School holidays are expected to boost viewing numbers further, allowing many younger supporters to stay up for the late-night fixture.

Pubs Prepare for Their Biggest Night in Years

Hospitality businesses have spent days preparing for what many believe will be their busiest trading session since England’s memorable run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Industry estimates suggest around 2.5 million supporters will gather inside the nation’s 35,000 pubs, where approximately 21 million pints are expected to be served during the evening.

Another 21 million pints are forecast to be consumed by fans watching from home, taking the nationwide total to an extraordinary 42 million.

The combination of football fever and the ongoing summer heatwave has prompted many venues to significantly increase beer orders ahead of the match.

Extended Opening Hours Deliver Welcome Boost

The decision to allow pubs to remain open until 2am has been welcomed by business owners who expect the extra trading hours to generate substantial revenue.

Mike Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, believes the extended licences will provide a valuable financial boost for thousands of hospitality businesses.

He noted that publicans have stocked millions of additional pints to meet the anticipated demand from supporters gathering to watch England.

The British Beer and Pub Association has also predicted a major rise in beer sales, estimating that pubs alone could serve an additional 5.5 million pints during the match.

England’s Mexico Victory Set the Stage

Supporters have already shown they are willing to sacrifice sleep to back the national team.

England’s last-16 victory over Mexico, which kicked off at 2am on a Monday morning, attracted a remarkable television audience of 9.1 million people.

The BBC described it as the largest live UK television audience ever recorded between 2am and 4am.

The match also proved hugely popular internationally, becoming the most-watched football game in United States history with an audience of 44 million.

Data from payments company Square showed that pub transactions surged dramatically during the overnight fixture, increasing by 367 percent between 1am and 3am and an astonishing 746 percent between 3am and 5am compared with a typical Monday morning.

Around six million pints were sold during that match, but businesses are expecting more than three times that figure for the Norway encounter.

Fans Gather Across Britain and in Miami

Support for England will not be limited to pubs.

Large public viewing events are planned across the country, with thousands expected at venues including Silverworks Island in east London and the 90s Fest at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield, both of which have adjusted schedules so supporters can watch the match live on giant screens.

Across the Atlantic, England are also expected to receive significant backing inside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, where approximately 30,000 supporters are expected to cheer on the Three Lions.

Norway Test Could Open the Door to the Final

England face a difficult challenge against Norway, led by star striker Erling Haaland.

Victory would send Tuchel’s side into a semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland on Wednesday, with the World Cup final scheduled for Sunday evening.

As excitement continues to build, discussions have even emerged about the possibility of a public holiday should England end their 60-year wait to lift the World Cup trophy.

Government sources have indicated Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer would consider recommending a bank holiday if England become world champions.

Speaking during the NATO summit in Ankara, Starmer declined to make any promises, joking that he did not want to tempt fate and would rather revisit the question if England reached the final.
