In a bold response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments regarding the protection of the European Union (EU), Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Federation, raised eyebrows and questions alike during a press briefing in Moscow. Zakharova, known for her candid remarks, didn’t shy away from expressing her skepticism about Macron’s insinuations of using nuclear weapons to safeguard EU members.
Zakharova Responds to Macron’s Comments
Zakharova questioned the underlying intentions behind Macron’s statements. “Who does Macron intend to protect the EU from with nuclear weapons?”, she asked, implying that if Russia is being hinted at as a potential threat, it should be stated outrightly. Zakharova’s response to Macron’s comments adds another layer to the ongoing dialogues surrounding international relations and nuclear weapon policies.
Dismissal of Russian Threat to EU and NATO
Zakharova didn’t just stop at Macron’s comments. She took a step further to dismiss the notion of a Russian threat to the EU and NATO, calling them “baseless fantasies” and “mythical.” She attributed such notions to the fevered imaginations of Western politicians, once again underlining her straightforward and frank style of communication.
Russia’s Reliable Bilateral Legal Framework
Within the same briefing, Zakharova also highlighted the steadfast bilateral legal framework between Russia and Armenia concerning security and military-technical cooperation. She emphasized Armenia’s collective guarantees within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the event of any possible aggression, thereby reinforcing Russia’s commitment to its allies and strategic partners.
