Arsenal’s Ben White might be making a long-awaited return to the England national team after a self-imposed break following a clash with senior coaching staff.
Known for his versatility on the pitch, White has become a crucial player for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, especially in the right-back role.
However, his absence from the England squad has been felt, as the Three Lions have struggled without his adaptable style of play.
The Decision to Step Away
In 2022, White removed himself from consideration for the national team, marking his last England appearance in March that year, during a friendly against Ivory Coast.
He joined the England squad for the Qatar World Cup, but left midway, citing personal reasons, which were widely believed to stem from a disagreement with assistant coach Steve Holland.
Since then, White has turned down further calls for national duty, including the chance to join the Euro 2024 squad this summer.
A New Start Under Thomas Tuchel?
According to reports from talkSPORT, White could be ready to return under newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel.
Presenter Adrian Durham mentioned on his show that White might be available for selection as early as March, just in time for Tuchel’s first matches as manager.
Durham speculated on whether Tuchel would welcome White back, considering both his skillset and past decision to step away.
England’s Current Injury Troubles
The potential return of a player like White could be especially timely, as England’s camp is currently facing significant player withdrawals.
Nine players have already pulled out of this international break ahead of their matches against Greece and Ireland.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite was one of the latest to withdraw due to injury, prompting Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah to be called up as his replacement.
Harry Kane’s Views on National Duty
In response to the recent spate of withdrawals, England captain Harry Kane has voiced his concerns.
Kane urged his teammates to prioritize playing for England above club commitments, crediting former manager Gareth Southgate with instilling this mentality.
Kane emphasized that representing England should be every player’s top priority, suggesting that some players may have opted out due to the demanding season.
A Delayed Return Due to Injury
Although White may soon be ready for a national team comeback, he is currently recovering from a knee procedure.
He’s been a regular starter for Arsenal whenever healthy, and his strong performances this season could bolster his case for an England recall.
If his recovery goes smoothly, White might be back in action just in time for Tuchel’s debut matches, potentially bringing his much-needed versatility back to the Three Lions.
