In the early hours of Sunday morning, a concerning event unfolded at the Eastgate Centre in Basildon, Essex.
A woman reported being assaulted in a secluded area of the Asda car park, sparking an immediate response from local authorities.
The alleged attack took place around 4 a.m., leading to a swift police investigation.
Arrest Made Following Allegations
Later that day, police arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of rape.
He remains in custody as officers continue to investigate the incident.
Detective Inspector Stewart Eastbrook, who is overseeing the case, mentioned that social media posts suggested another incident earlier in the night, involving two women being followed in the area.
Community Concerns and Ongoing Investigation
DI Eastbrook acknowledged the impact this case might have on the local community, expressing empathy for those who frequent the area and may feel uneasy following the news.
“We understand this incident may cause concern for those living, working, or regularly visiting this part of town,” he said.
Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Essex Police are urging anyone who was near the Eastgate Centre between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. to come forward with any information.
“If you saw anything unusual, or if you have dashcam footage, please contact our team.
Even the smallest detail could assist in the investigation,” DI Eastbrook added.
