A man who stalked a woman back to her New York City apartment before brutally murdering her has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Assamad Nash, 27, followed Christina Yuna Lee back to her Chinatown apartment in February 2022, where he brutally stabbed her over forty times. He pleaded guilty to murder and burglary as a sexually motivated felony in June.
In court, Nash appeared in an orange jumpsuit, masked and restrained.
Despite acknowledging Nash’s mental illness, the judge imposed the maximum sentence, citing public safety concerns.
Lee, a digital producer at Splice, was returning from a night out when Nash trailed her into her apartment building. Security footage captured Nash slipping in unnoticed behind her as she entered.
Nash waited until Lee reached her apartment, then attacked her as she unlocked her door.
Despite Lee’s brave attempt to defend herself with a knife, Nash overpowered her, inflicting over 40 stab wounds.
Neighbors called the police upon hearing Lee’s screams, but Nash barricaded himself inside Lee’s apartment.
Police arrived quickly but were delayed in gaining entry, during which time Lee tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Lee’s father expressed profound grief and criticized the police response, considering legal action against the city for what he perceived as negligence.
Conclusion
District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized the devastating impact of Lee’s death on her family and the broader community.
