Nearly 20 years after ending her engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds, Alanis Morissette is revisiting one of the most difficult periods of her personal life with a new perspective.
The Grammy Award-winning singer, now 52, has spoken candidly about the emotional fallout from the breakup and the way she was treated by the media during that time.
Rather than focusing solely on the relationship itself, Morissette says the experience highlighted a broader culture that often subjected women to invasive questioning and public judgment.
Singer Criticizes Intrusive Interview Culture
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times Style, Morissette looked back on her widely discussed 2008 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, where she was repeatedly questioned about her breakup and personal life.
She said the interview reflected what she now sees as an accepted pattern of disrespect toward women in the entertainment industry.
According to Morissette, if she were placed in a similar situation today, she would challenge those questions rather than quietly accepting them.
She argued that conversations once considered normal frequently crossed personal boundaries and unfairly targeted female celebrities.
Viral Interview Revisited
The resurfaced interview gained renewed attention online after clips circulated on social media.
During the conversation, Morissette acknowledged that the end of her engagement had been deeply painful, but she emphasized that the intensive therapy she attended afterward was not centered on Reynolds.
Instead, she explained that counseling was part of her own personal healing process and emotional growth.
Throughout the interview, she avoided criticizing her former fiancé, even when asked about his personal life after their split.
Ryan Reynolds Moved On After the Breakup
Morissette and Reynolds began dating in 2002 and remained together for several years before ending their engagement in 2007.
Only a few months after the relationship ended, Reynolds began dating actress Scarlett Johansson. The pair later married before divorcing in 2011.
The following year, Reynolds married actress Blake Lively, with whom he has since built a family.
Morissette, meanwhile, chose not to publicly speculate about Reynolds’ relationships during her interview, repeatedly declining opportunities to comment on his personal decisions.
Finding Lasting Love With Souleye
Several years after the breakup, Morissette found happiness with rapper Souleye, whose real name is Mario Treadway.
The couple married in 2010 and now share three children.
Speaking about her husband, Morissette described him as someone who embraced her personality rather than trying to change it. She said previous relationships often left her feeling misunderstood, while Souleye encouraged her to express herself freely and supported her individuality.
Living as a Highly Sensitive Person
Morissette also reflected on how understanding herself has transformed both her personal life and career.
She described herself as a lifelong highly sensitive person and empath, explaining that for many years she struggled to manage those traits.
The singer admitted she previously turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including overworking and other addictive behaviors, while trying to regulate overwhelming emotions.
A New Understanding of Herself
Looking back, Morissette believes much of her earlier loneliness stemmed from feeling fundamentally different from those around her.
She said she often felt misunderstood and found it difficult to explain her emotional experiences in ways others could relate to.
Today, however, she believes attitudes have changed. Rather than dismissing her perspective, she says people are now more willing to listen and engage with conversations about emotional sensitivity, mental well-being and self-awareness.
As she continues to celebrate the enduring legacy of Jagged Little Pill, Morissette says the journey through heartbreak, healing and self-discovery has ultimately shaped both the artist and person she has become.
