In a move that surprised fans across the country, former Liverpool striker Fabio Borini has signed with Salford City, the League Two club co-owned by football legends David Beckham and Gary Neville.

The 34-year-old forward joins on a short-term deal, following a month of training with the team, and could be ready to feature in his first match this weekend.

For followers of top-flight football, Borini’s appearance in England’s fourth tier is unexpected, but the Italian is embracing the challenge with open arms.

From Chelsea to Anfield and Beyond

Borini first arrived in England back in 2007, when Chelsea secured his services from Bologna.

His time at Stamford Bridge, however, was disrupted by a major hernia operation, and he eventually moved on loan to Championship side Swansea City in 2011.

After spells at Parma and Roma, Borini returned to the Premier League in 2012, signing for Liverpool.

Across three seasons at Anfield, he made 38 appearances, though a loan spell to Sunderland interrupted his run.

It was at Sunderland where Borini truly found his form. Returning permanently in 2015, he notched 17 goals and five assists in 93 appearances, earning the respect of fans and teammates alike.

Following this, the forward enjoyed stints with AC Milan, Hellas Verona, Sampdoria, and Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk.

Returning to England Mid-Season

After being out of contract following Sampdoria’s relegation this summer, Borini jumped at the chance to return to England, viewing the move as a personal and professional challenge.

Salford City offered him the opportunity to get back into competitive football, particularly following an injury to regular striker Jay Bird.

“Training with Salford and the facilities they offered has been fantastic,” Borini said.

“It’s given me a chance to stay fit while transitioning between contracts.

I can bring experience on the pitch, but it’s also about leadership in training, how to manage games, and helping teammates whenever I can.”

Learning and Leading in League Two

Borini admits that League Two football presents a learning curve. “I’ve never played in this league, so I’m eager to learn from my teammates about its style and characteristics,” he explained.

“I’m an open book for the squad — if they want to learn from me or use my experience, I’m here for that.”

Despite stepping down several tiers from the Premier League and Serie A, Borini’s motivation is purely about the love of the game.

“It’s a challenge I’m embracing because I want real football — something that warms my heart for football, not anything else,” he said.

Short-Term Deal Brings Depth to Salford City

Borini’s contract with Salford runs until January, providing the League Two side with much-needed attacking options.

With his wealth of experience in some of Europe’s top leagues, the former Liverpool forward brings both skill and leadership to a squad eager to climb the ranks.

Salford City fans will be keen to see whether Borini can translate his Premier League pedigree into impact at the fourth-tier level, offering both goals and guidance to his new teammates.
