A disturbing incident in west London has left the community reeling after a young Afghan man allegedly stabbed three people, including a council worker and his landlord.
Safi Dawood, 22, is facing one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder following the attack, which reportedly occurred amid an eviction dispute.
The most serious victim, Wayne Broadhurst, 49, a council worker with Greener Ealing, was out walking his dog when the attack happened.
Broadhurst was stabbed approximately 14 times and later died at the scene.
Triple Stabbing Leaves Victims Severely Injured
Alongside Broadhurst, Dawood allegedly attacked his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, and a 14-year-old boy. Mr Farrukh, a business consultant, suffered life-changing injuries.
The teenager was hospitalized but has since been discharged.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Dawood and Broadhurst were previously unknown to each other, adding a chilling randomness to the attack.
Police were called to the scene at around 5 p.m., where officers and paramedics treated the victims for stab wounds.
The scale of the assault shocked neighbors, and the motive appears tied to Dawood’s pending eviction from an annex on Mr Farrukh’s property.
Fitness to Stand Trial in Question
At a hearing at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutors revealed that Dawood had been assessed by a psychiatrist and found “not fit to plead or stand trial” at present.
No timeline was provided for potential recovery, leaving open the possibility that he may never face a jury.
Dawood appeared via video link from Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire and spoke only to confirm his name with the help of a Pashto translator.
Family members were able to observe the proceedings remotely.
He was not required to enter any pleas during the 15-minute hearing, and the next court date is scheduled for April 10.
Background and Legal Proceedings
Dawood arrived in the UK five years ago in a lorry and was granted asylum with leave to remain in 2022, according to the Home Office.
He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
A provisional trial has been set for July, lasting up to three weeks, though his current mental state may affect this timeline.
Tributes to Council Worker Wayne Broadhurst
Broadhurst’s employer, Greener Ealing, described his death as a devastating loss.
Managing director Katarina Pohancenikova said he was a dedicated member of the team whose work made a meaningful contribution to the community, particularly in sustainable waste disposal and grounds maintenance.
What’s Next?
Authorities will continue to monitor Dawood’s mental health to determine whether he can eventually stand trial.
In the meantime, police investigations into the stabbing remain ongoing.
The court process is expected to revisit the case on April 10, and the community continues to grapple with the trauma of the violent attack.
