Travis Hunter Embraces Spiritual Journey with Baptism in Jacksonville While Playing in Home Game Against Seahawks

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter made headlines for putting his spiritual life front and center, choosing to get baptized on the very morning of his team’s home game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The second-round pick from this year’s draft spent Sunday morning at the Celebration Church, a non-denominational parish in Jacksonville, reflecting on a personal journey of faith.

Hunter explained his decision, saying, “It’s Sunday. It’s God’s day.

I’ve been planning to go get baptized for a minute. I changed my life over to become a better man.”

His public embrace of faith drew admiration from many fans, though it also caught the attention of outspoken sports commentator Skip Bayless.

Skip Bayless Criticizes Hunter’s Timing

Bayless, never shy about expressing strong opinions, went on a 28-minute video rant on X, taking issue with Hunter’s timing.

“Allow me to tell you why there was no way that Travis Hunter should have chosen to be baptized on the morning of a 1:00 game in Jacksonville,” Bayless declared.

The 73-year-old pundit argued that Hunter’s actions reflected a lack of commitment to football, claiming the young star was “mentally checking out” due to limited playing time.

Bayless suggested that the Heisman Trophy winner’s decision to get baptized was an indicator of where his focus currently lies—somewhere other than the gridiron.

Limited Playing Time Fuels Speculation

Bayless noted that Hunter has not been utilized as much as expected, particularly on defense, where his talent is considered exceptional.

“These are not normal circumstances for Travis Hunter the football player.

The Jags are using him so little—especially on defense—that Travis Hunter is starting to lose interest,” Bayless said, speculating that the baptism was an outlet for the rookie’s unfulfilled on-field potential.

However, Bayless clarified he didn’t believe the baptism was a protest, framing it instead as a window into Hunter’s mindset, suggesting that his priorities may currently lie more with personal growth than football.

Hunter Performs on Game Day Despite Criticism

Despite the critique, Hunter’s baptism did not negatively impact his participation in the game.

He was on time and played, recording four catches for 15 yards and adding two tackles in the Jaguars’ 20-12 loss to the Seahawks.

Coaches have not raised concerns about Hunter’s effort or attitude.

Head coach Liam Coen told reporters in late September, “I wouldn’t say he’s behind.

I think we can probably do a better job of helping him in some ways.”

Hunter’s Stats and Upcoming Match

Hunter currently ranks third on the Jaguars in receiving yards, with 197, and is second among wide receivers.

Looking ahead, he aims to improve his numbers as Jacksonville heads to London to face the Los Angeles Rams in the next matchup.
