Launching International Cooperatives Day 2023
The Lagos State Government marked the commencement of International Cooperatives Day 2023 with a press conference on Tuesday.
Hosted at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives in Alausa – Ikeja, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Adetutu Ososanya, FCA, emphasized the alignment of this annual celebration with global practices, a tradition since 1923.
This year’s 101st edition is particularly significant as the 29th recognized by the United Nations.
The Relevance of Cooperatives Today
In her address, Mrs. Ososanya eloquently expressed the continued relevance of the Cooperative Movement in today’s world.
She underscored the role cooperatives play in overcoming developmental challenges, alleviating poverty, generating jobs, and fostering global prosperity.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration acknowledges over 3000 Cooperative Societies in the State as vital engines for citizens’ empowerment.
Their contribution to economic, social, and cultural development is significant, and the government emphasizes an effective partnership with the Cooperative Movement.
This relationship underscores the annual celebration of Lagos State Cooperators and Cooperative Societies.
Planned Activities for the Week
The celebratory week is filled with engaging activities, including an Awareness Walk, commissioning of Community Projects, religious services, Panel Discussions, Raffles, Exhibitions, Luncheons, and Merit Awards.
The events are spread across various locations, reflecting a comprehensive and inclusive approach to honoring cooperatives’ contributions.
Appreciation from the Lagos State Cooperative Federation (LASCOFED)
LASCOFED President, Mr. Oladipo Shobule, expressed gratitude to the State for supporting the Cooperative Movement and recognizing its structured role in fulfilling social obligations to the citizens.
He praised Lagos State cooperatives as exemplary in their structure and support for government initiatives.
