As the women’s team refuses to play until Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales is fired and male players join the boycott, World Cup standout Jenni Hermoso claims she “didn’t consent” to Rubiales kissing her.

Spanish World Cup star Jenni Hermoso has stated that she did not give her consent to the kiss from football president Luis Rubiales, which occurred after the women’s World Cup final. As a response to this incident, all 23 players of the Spanish women’s football squad have collectively signed a statement refusing to participate in any matches for the national team until Rubiales is removed from his position.

Hermoso clarifies that she did not agree to the kiss and emphasizes that her words are being questioned and misrepresented. The controversy surrounding this incident has led to a strong reaction from the team members who demand Rubiales’ dismissal. The players’ union, FUTPRO, facilitated the signing of the joint statement, which demands the removal of the federation leadership and expresses the players’ refusal to play under Rubiales’ leadership.

While Rubiales initially defended the kiss, stating that it was consensual and spontaneous, many players, including well-known names like Alexis Putellas and Cata Coll, have publicly supported Hermoso and expressed their outrage. The Spanish government has also initiated legal proceedings to have Rubiales suspended from his role. Amid the mounting pressure for his resignation, Rubiales defiantly proclaimed that he will not step down.

Despite the controversy, Rubiales extended the contract of women’s team coach Jorge Vilda, which led to further criticism. The Spanish women’s football committee president, Rafael del Amo, has resigned in response to Rubiales’ decision to remain in his position. The situation has triggered significant upheaval within Spanish women’s football and has sparked discussions about sexism, harassment, and the treatment of female athletes in the sport.
