…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal in Isabo, Abeokuta, commenced the hearing of a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, against the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Dapo Abiodun on Monday.
Both parties called upon their members to attend the tribunal, intending to demonstrate solidarity for their respective candidates.
Chaos Unleashed as Agitators Engage in Violence
Unfortunately, the atmosphere turned chaotic when political agitators arrived at the scene wielding canes and began attacking perceived opponents.
Shockingly, law enforcement officials, including police officers, stood by without taking any action to intervene in the escalating violence.
Despite police blockades at both ends of the court road, the agitators continued their assaults with impunity.
Police Inaction Raises Concerns
Remarkably, amidst the turmoil caused by the agitators, the police made no effort to arrest the individuals or bring the situation under control.
A police officer, speaking anonymously, admitted their powerlessness, stating, “There is nothing we can do, we can’t arrest them.
Everything about Ogun is always different.”
This inaction by the police allowed the chaos to persist and further endangered the safety of those present.
Victims Speak Out, PDP Members Flee
One PDP member recounted a harrowing experience of being beaten and robbed of personal belongings, including their phone and money, during the violent clashes.
Faced with this hostile environment, PDP members made the decision to leave the court premises in order to avoid further attacks.
Alarming Trend of Attacks on Opposition Members
Tragically, the occurrence of violence targeting opposition members during tribunal hearings has become increasingly common in Ogun State following every election.
This disturbing trend raises serious concerns about the safety and security of individuals involved in the political process and the need for immediate intervention to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
