Tragedy struck Chicago’s Navy Pier on Tuesday afternoon when two men were fatally shot, leaving one of the victims, Lamont Johnson, 51, from Lansing, Michigan, identified as one of the casualties.
The shooting took place at a popular tourist spot, casting a shadow over the usual bustling atmosphere.
The Victims
Johnson, alongside another victim, a 47-year-old man whose identity remains undisclosed, was working as part of a subcontractor crew at the pier.
Both men were tragically killed in the attack. Police later confirmed that both victims died from their injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital shortly after the shooting.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred around 1:20 PM at a loading dock, with authorities describing the suspect as a disgruntled former employee.
The individual reportedly targeted the victims and opened fire.
According to Chicago Police Chief Jon Hein, the suspect was still on the run as of the latest update, but authorities were confident in their identification of the individual.
The Suspect
The suspect, a 36-year-old former employee of one of Navy Pier’s restaurants, had been dismissed from his job on October 14.
Despite his termination, he retained access to an administrative office on the premises.
Authorities are aware of the suspect’s criminal history, including a past conviction for armed robbery in 2008, and a dropped gun charge in 2017.
Police Response
By 2 PM, police had arrived in full tactical gear, setting up a perimeter around the pier while asking everyone to shelter in place.
The lockdown alert was quickly disseminated to Navy Pier’s 70 tenants through an internal communication system.
Brian Murphy, the Chief Operating Officer of Navy Pier, reassured the public that there was no immediate danger to visitors.
Ongoing Investigation
As of Wednesday morning, the gunman was still at large, with authorities believing the shooting was an isolated incident.
The police continue their search, while Navy Pier officials express their condolences to the victims’ families, particularly those who had simply come to work that day.
