Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND) has selected the ten finalists for its ambitious €125 million Next Frontier AI Challenge, an initiative designed to accelerate the development of world-class artificial intelligence research organizations capable of competing with leading AI ecosystems in the United States and China.
The competition represents one of Europe’s most significant public investments in advanced AI innovation, offering substantial non-dilutive funding to help emerging teams establish globally competitive AI laboratories over the coming years.
Finalists Include Emerging AI Companies and Stealth Ventures
The selected finalists bring together a diverse group of AI startups and research-driven organizations.
Those advancing to the next phase include Aionic Labs, UMA, Weight Space Labs, Continuous Intelligence, Paradigma, After Labs, Feyer, and Ontic Labs, alongside two additional teams that are currently operating in stealth mode.
Each finalist has the opportunity to receive up to €26.5 million in equity-free funding, allowing participants to focus on technological breakthroughs without giving up ownership stakes.
Multi-Stage Competition Rewards Technical Progress
The Next Frontier AI Challenge has been structured as a 24-month program divided into three competitive phases, with continued funding dependent on each team’s performance.
During the opening stage, all ten finalists will receive funding of up to €3 million to begin developing their AI capabilities.
Following an evaluation by an independent jury, as many as six teams will move into the second phase, where each can secure an additional €8 million.
The competition concludes with a final stage in which up to three teams will remain.
Each of those finalists will receive another €15.5 million to continue expanding their research, technology, and operational capacity.
Equity-Free Funding Designed to Encourage Private Capital
Unlike many startup funding programs, SPRIND’s financial support does not require participating teams to surrender equity.
The agency has also encouraged finalists to pursue private investment throughout the competition, creating opportunities to combine public backing with venture and institutional capital as their technologies mature.
This structure is intended to strengthen Europe’s AI ecosystem while enabling participating organizations to scale independently and attract long-term investors.
Winning Teams to Receive Support for Billion-Euro Fundraising
Beyond the direct financial awards, the competition offers an additional incentive for its strongest performers.
Once the challenge concludes in autumn 2028, the three winning teams will receive support from SPRIND in pursuing up to €1 billion each in combined public and private investment.
The long-term objective is to help establish globally competitive AI laboratories capable of driving major scientific advances and positioning Europe as a stronger force in the international artificial intelligence race.
