The United Kingdom has renewed its strong backing for Ukraine during an interactive dialogue at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, expressing alarm over what it described as continuing human rights abuses linked to Russia’s military actions.
Speaking on behalf of the UK, Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders thanked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Secretary-General for their latest reports on the situation in Ukraine.
She also extended sympathy to those impacted by Russia’s recent large-scale attack on Kyiv, describing the humanitarian consequences as deeply concerning.
UK Condemns Alleged Human Rights Abuses in Occupied Territories
Addressing the Council, the UK said it remains gravely concerned about Russia’s ongoing military campaign and the reported human rights situation in areas of Ukraine that remain under temporary Russian occupation, including Crimea.
The statement pointed to a range of alleged violations documented in the UN reports, including restrictions on fundamental freedoms, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture, and other forms of ill-treatment.
Britain also highlighted concerns over the treatment of the Crimean Tatar community and other groups living in occupied territories, saying they continue to face persecution.
In addition, the UK raised concerns about reports involving the transfer and deportation of Ukrainian civilians and children, describing the issue as one that demands continued international attention.
Britain Reiterates Support for Ukraine’s Territorial Integrity
The UK reaffirmed its longstanding position that Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity must be respected within its internationally recognised borders.
The statement made clear that this position includes the Crimean Peninsula, which the UK continues to recognise as part of Ukraine.
British officials stressed that support for Ukraine remains unwavering and that London will continue backing international initiatives aimed at defending the country’s territorial integrity and upholding international law.
Commitment to Accountability for International Law Violations
During the dialogue, the UK underscored the importance of ensuring accountability for alleged breaches of international law connected to the conflict.
The government said it will continue supporting international mechanisms designed to investigate reported violations and promote justice.
Britain also reaffirmed its backing for efforts that keep global attention focused on Crimea, including continued engagement through the International Crimea Platform.
UN Monitoring Described as Essential
The UK concluded by praising the ongoing work of the United Nations in documenting developments on the ground in Ukraine.
According to the statement, continued monitoring, reporting and independent documentation by UN bodies remain critical for strengthening accountability efforts, protecting human rights, and ensuring that alleged abuses are not overlooked as the conflict continues.
Britain closed its remarks by thanking the Council and reiterating its support for international efforts aimed at defending human rights and maintaining global attention on the situation in Ukraine.
