A fatal confrontation in a Walmart parking lot in North Lauderdale, Florida, has sparked an active investigation after a 62-year-old military veteran was shot during an argument reportedly centered on a parking space.
The victim, identified as Bart DiGuglielmo, was shot shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday and later died from his injuries at Broward Health Medical Center.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter, including the shooter’s claim that she acted in self-defense.
Surveillance Footage Captures Escalating Confrontation
Video recorded at the scene shows a tense exchange between DiGuglielmo and a woman who had exited her vehicle while carrying a firearm.
Witnesses said the disagreement began after DiGuglielmo’s white SUV allegedly prevented the woman from parking.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with local media, DiGuglielmo eventually moved his vehicle, allowing the woman to take the parking space.
However, rather than ending there, the confrontation continued when the woman reportedly approached the occupants of DiGuglielmo’s vehicle, prompting him to step out and confront her.
The footage shows the pair exchanging words as the woman repeatedly pointed a handgun at DiGuglielmo while instructing him to walk away.
Moments Before the Fatal Shot
During the confrontation, DiGuglielmo initially appeared to back away before turning around once more toward the woman.
At that point, she was seen holding her phone while continuing to aim the weapon.
Seconds later, a single gunshot rang out, striking DiGuglielmo and causing him to collapse onto the pavement.
Video from the scene appears to show the conversation continuing even as the wounded veteran struggled on the ground, alternating between sitting upright and lying back while awaiting emergency responders.
Deputies Respond and Arrest the Shooter
Deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrived at the Walmart parking lot and took the woman into custody. Officials have not publicly identified her.
Emergency medical personnel transported DiGuglielmo to Broward Health Medical Center, but despite treatment, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators say the woman has cooperated with detectives throughout the investigation.
Witness Describes Chaotic Scene
David Anderson, who witnessed part of the incident, recalled hearing a woman shouting moments before the shooting.
“I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” Anderson told CBS News. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things.”
Authorities continue to examine witness statements alongside surveillance footage to determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded.
Family Mourns Decorated Veteran
DiGuglielmo’s family has described him as a compassionate man whose death has left them devastated.
His sister said he proudly served in the U.S. military during Operation Desert Storm and remembered him as a devoted Christian who would never intentionally harm anyone.
She also noted that DiGuglielmo spent approximately three decades working as a nurse before retiring.
According to the family, he was a twin whose brother had passed away only a few years earlier, making the latest loss especially painful.
Daughter Pays Emotional Tribute
Following her father’s death, DiGuglielmo’s daughter, Amanda Marie, thanked friends and supporters for the outpouring of sympathy shown to the family.
In a Facebook message, she expressed appreciation for the prayers and condolences they had received while also announcing that immediate family members would not be participating in media interviews during their period of mourning.
Amanda Marie also reflected on her relationship with her father, saying she would always wish they had been able to share more time together as father and daughter.
Self-Defense Claim Remains Under Review
Investigators say the woman has told detectives she fired the weapon because she believed she was acting in self-defense.
That assertion remains a central focus of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed, and officials continue reviewing surveillance footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence before making a final determination.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details as the investigation remains active.
