President Donald Trump has called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Democratic lawmakers whom he accused of threatening Republican officials and supporters with impeachment and other forms of punishment.

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump described the alleged threats as “extortion at the highest level” and insisted that those responsible should be held accountable.

The president specifically mentioned Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, accusing her of targeting young people who support Republican values.

Trump claimed that Democrats had threatened several individuals, including the US attorney general, with impeachment despite allegedly having no grounds for such action.

“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment,” he wrote.

He further alleged that Republican donors were being threatened with imprisonment and other penalties because of their political affiliations and support for the Republican Party.

President Demands Immediate DOJ Action

Trump described the alleged actions as another example of what he called the weaponisation of the justice system and political lawfare.

He also claimed that threatening letters had been sent to some Republican officials, although he did not identify the recipients or disclose the contents of the correspondence.

Calling for an immediate investigation, Trump said the Department of Justice should examine what he described as a criminal act.

He also argued that those responsible for the alleged threats, rather than Republican officials, should face imprisonment.

“The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast!” he wrote.

The president’s post did not provide further details about the alleged letters or identify all the Democrats he accused of making threats.

The Daily Mail said it had contacted the White House, the Department of Justice and Senator Slotkin for comments.

Trump Hints at More Changes Within His Administration

The president’s demand for an investigation came amid growing uncertainty over the future of members of his administration following the Republican Party’s poor performance in the midterm elections.

Trump had indicated that further personnel changes could be expected after announcing the departure of his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, on Friday.

During an interview with 60 Minutes, recorded before Wiles’ departure was announced, Trump was asked by journalist Ross Douthat whether he expected to dismiss anyone following his party’s electoral losses.

The Republican president responded affirmatively, indicating that changes could be made within his administration.

Although he expressed confidence in his cabinet, Trump acknowledged that some adjustments were possible.

“I love my cabinet, I think they’re good,” he said.

“But I’ll be doing maybe a few changes. I don’t want to mention who.”

Reports Emerge of Tension Within Trump’s Cabinet

Meanwhile, reports have emerged of increasing divisions and internal disagreements among senior members of the Trump administration.

According to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, sources described the atmosphere within the administration as increasingly tense, with factions and disagreements becoming more pronounced.

Collins reported that aides had compared the situation to the internal conflicts that characterised Trump’s first presidential term.

She also said sources believed Wiles’ departure would further accelerate changes in the distribution of influence and power within the administration.

CNN’s sources reportedly indicated that Trump blamed Wiles for the Republican Party’s poor midterm performance.

However, when asked about her departure on Friday, Trump told reporters that the decision was “not because of the election.”

Democrats Record Major Midterm Election Gains

The developments followed significant Democratic victories in the midterm elections held on Tuesday.

Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing a major electoral setback to the Republican Party.

The party also recorded notable victories in Texas, a traditionally Republican stronghold, with Gina Hinojosa winning the governorship and James Talarico securing a Senate seat.

The election results have been followed by questions about the future direction of Trump’s administration and possible changes among his closest advisers.
