In a major shift, several hospitals across the U.S. have suspended their transgender programs for minors after the Trump administration imposed new restrictions.
The executive order issued by President Donald Trump last week has focused on limiting what the White House refers to as the “chemical and surgical mutilation” of young people.
Executive Order on Transgender Procedures for Youth
The order from President Trump directly impacts transgender surgeries and hormone treatments for minors.
He stated that the United States will no longer fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support these procedures for young individuals.
Furthermore, the order mandates that any federal agencies involved in offering research or educational grants to medical institutions ensure that these institutions are not administering transgender drugs or performing surgeries on youth.
Hospitals Respond to the Executive Order
As a result of the new directive, several prominent hospitals have temporarily halted certain practices related to transgender care for minors.
Notably, Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. has paused the prescription of puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender-identifying minors.
However, the hospital clarified that it had already refrained from performing gender-affirming surgeries on minors.
Other Medical Institutions Follow Suit
In Virginia, the health system at Virginia Commonwealth University, along with Children’s Hospital of Richmond, have followed suit by pausing both surgeries and medication for transgender minors.
Denver Health in Colorado has also put a stop to gender-affirming surgeries, in accordance with the White House’s directive.
Some Hospitals Remain Uncertain
On the other hand, some hospitals are still evaluating the situation.
Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, for example, has stated that it is assessing any potential impacts on its clinical services following the order.
For now, the hospital continues to offer transgender procedures, though it has indicated that its approach may change in the future.
These changes reflect a growing divide over the issue of transgender care for minors and the policies that govern it.
