Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva marked his return to competitive football with an impressive performance for Hong Kong side Sha Tin, scoring on his debut and collecting the man-of-the-match award in a 1-1 draw against Hong Kong Rangers on Saturday.

The 40-year-old came out of retirement to resume his playing career, making his first competitive appearance in more than three years after previously stepping away from football following a serious knee injury.

Silva Scores on His Sha Tin Debut

Silva made an immediate impact after being named in Sha Tin’s starting line-up for the encounter against Hong Kong Rangers.

The Spanish midfielder opened the scoring in the 56th minute, converting a penalty with a composed finish into the bottom-left corner.

His effort sent goalkeeper Ka-Yu Yip in the opposite direction and gave the home side the advantage.

The goal triggered celebrations among Silva’s teammates and supporters, with several fans capturing the moment on their mobile phones.

However, Sha Tin were unable to maintain their lead as Ibrahim Yakubu Nassam found the equaliser for the visitors in the 65th minute.

Midfielder Receives Man-of-the-Match Recognition

Despite the match ending in a draw, Silva’s contribution earned him the man-of-the-match award after the final whistle.

His return was not entirely without setbacks, as he received a yellow card with 11 minutes remaining before being substituted in the 84th minute.

Sha Tin had already been reduced to 10 players three minutes earlier when Maxwell Ansah received a second booking and was sent off in the 81st minute.

The numerical disadvantage prevented the hosts from securing all three points, but Silva’s individual performance provided a notable highlight on his return.

Sha Tin Struggle Near the Bottom of the League

Sha Tin currently occupy 10th position in the Hong Kong Premier League, having collected five points from their opening seven matches.

They are just one point and one position above Eastern AA, who currently occupy the league’s only relegation place.

The club are also 14 points behind league leaders North District as they look to improve their position in the competition.

Silva will have another opportunity to help his new team when they face Southern District in the Hong Kong League Cup Losers’ play-offs on Saturday.

Silva Returns Three Years After Career-Ending Injury

The former Spain international originally retired in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing for Real Sociedad.

He subsequently stepped away from professional football, bringing an end to a career that included some of the biggest achievements in European and international football.

Silva is particularly remembered for his decade-long spell at Manchester City between 2010 and 2020.

During his time at the Etihad Stadium, he won 11 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.

His contribution to the club was recognised with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.

World Cup Winner Begins New Chapter in Hong Kong

Beyond his achievements at club level, Silva was an important member of Spain’s golden generation.

He helped the national team win the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, alongside European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.

Last month, the former Manchester City star announced that he would be returning to professional football by joining Hong Kong outfit Sha Tin.

Speaking in an Instagram video following the announcement, Silva expressed his excitement about the move.

“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” he said.

His appearance against Hong Kong Rangers marked his first competitive outing since his retirement in 2023, with the midfielder now looking forward to making further contributions to his new club.
