…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. In a heartbreaking incident along the Crocodile River, between the Lion Park and Hartbeespoort Dam, two tourists lost their lives while canoeing.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed this unfortunate event.
The ill-fated canoeing expedition involved a group of 26 individuals, comprising 20 tourists from Singapore and six local river guides.
Capsizing and Rescue Efforts
As Craig Lambinon, the NSRI spokesperson, described, the incident occurred when eight tourists on four canoes capsized.
The six river guides swiftly came to their aid, and CPR efforts were initiated on a male and a female tourist.
Additionally, six other tourists and two river guides required assistance in the water.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and diligently performed CPR on an adult male and an adult female.
Tragically, despite their extensive efforts, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Survivors and Injuries
Two of the river guides, fortunately, received stabilization from the paramedics and were transported to the hospital for further care.
The rescue operation involved the cooperation of the river guides, the tourists themselves, and emergency services, resulting in the successful retrieval of six tourists and two river guides from the water.
The remaining six tourists who were rescued received treatment for their injuries on-site before being discharged.
The bodies of the deceased have been entrusted to the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Investigation and Support
Authorities have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the cause of this tragic water-related incident.
It is worth noting that twelve members of the group emerged unscathed from the ordeal.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon assured that all casualties have been identified, and the tour operator is providing assistance to the affected tourists and their families, working closely with the relevant authorities.
This devastating incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with water activities, highlighting the importance of safety precautions and preparedness.
