South Africans planning their end-of-year holidays can use December’s public holidays to secure an extended break while taking only a few days of annual leave.
By arranging leave around Christmas and New Year’s Day, employees can enjoy 10 consecutive days off by booking four days of leave from Monday, 28 December, to Thursday, 31 December.
The arrangement takes advantage of Christmas Day falling on a Friday and New Year’s Day falling on the following Friday.
December and New Year Public Holidays to Plan Around
South Africa’s public holidays during the period include the following dates:
- Wednesday, 16 December – Day of Reconciliation
- Friday, 25 December – Christmas Day
- Saturday, 26 December – Day of Goodwill
- Friday, 1 January 2027 – New Year’s Day
Employees who take annual leave from 28 to 31 December can combine their four leave days with the surrounding weekends and public holidays to create a 10-day break.
Two Ways to Get a Mid-December Break
Workers who would prefer to take time off earlier in December also have options around the Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday, 16 December.
One option is to take Thursday, 17 December, and Friday, 18 December, as annual leave. This creates a five-day break from Wednesday to Sunday using two leave days.
Alternatively, employees can take Monday, 14 December, and Tuesday, 15 December, off. This provides five consecutive days away from work, from Saturday, 12 December, to Wednesday, 16 December.
Those who use both options can secure nine days off between 12 and 20 December by using four annual leave days.
School Holidays Also Affect December Leave Plans
Parents planning family holidays may need to coordinate their leave with the school calendar.
Schools are scheduled to close on 10 December and reopen on 13 January 2027.
For employees with limited annual leave available, taking the four working days between 28 and 31 December is one option for extending their time off during the festive period.
Workers should also check whether their employers have a scheduled year-end shutdown, as this may affect their leave arrangements.
Employees Advised to Apply for Leave Early
December is a popular period for annual leave, making early applications important for employees who want specific dates off.
Those planning to travel are also advised to consider travelling on off-peak days when arranging their journeys.
South Africans planning road trips can compare the expected costs of driving between Johannesburg and Durban before finalising their holiday budgets.
