England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed strong concerns about the standard of officiating at the World Cup, warning that inconsistent refereeing and unpredictable VAR interventions could unfairly eliminate teams from the tournament.
His comments came after England secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mexico in an emotionally charged Round of 16 clash at the Azteca Stadium.
Although the Three Lions advanced to the quarter-finals, Tuchel left the match frustrated by several key decisions that he believes highlighted deeper issues with the tournament’s officiating.
Heated Moments on the Touchline Reflected Growing Frustration
The encounter was filled with tension both on and off the pitch.
Tuchel and assistant coach Anthony Barry were visibly involved in animated discussions with match officials and members of the Mexican coaching staff as several controversial decisions unfolded.
England’s Jarell Quansah was shown a red card after a VAR review, while captain Harry Kane was penalized for a challenge inside the penalty area following another pitchside review.
Neither incident had initially been punished by referee Alireza Faghani before video intervention prompted changes to both decisions.
Tuchel argued that the pattern of officiating lacked consistency, particularly compared with earlier matches in the competition, when VAR appeared to be used less aggressively.
Manager Says Officials Lack Consistency at the Highest Level
Speaking after the match, Tuchel did not hide his disappointment with the quality of refereeing.
He argued that teams competing at the highest level deserve equally high-quality officiating, describing the decision-making as inconsistent and difficult to predict.
According to the England boss, both major calls and smaller in-game decisions have varied too widely, leaving players and coaches uncertain about how incidents will be judged.
Tuchel also criticized the conduct of fourth officials, saying coaching staff have been strictly monitored over technical-area rules while, in his view, far more significant refereeing inconsistencies remain unresolved.
VAR Decisions Continue to Divide Opinion
The England manager questioned how VAR is being applied during crucial knockout matches, particularly when incidents that are not deemed fouls in real time later result in penalties or red cards after video review.
Using Kane’s penalty incident as an example, Tuchel suggested that football remains a contact sport and argued that isolated still images do not always capture the full context of a challenge.
He believes overturning decisions in such situations creates uncertainty and undermines confidence in the officiating process.
Rather than asking his players to adjust their approach because of unpredictable VAR reviews, Tuchel indicated that such split-second situations leave little opportunity for footballers to think about possible video intervention before making a challenge.
Quarter-Final Against Norway Now Awaits
England’s reward for overcoming Mexico is a quarter-final meeting with Norway in Miami on Saturday.
Despite his frustration with the officiating, Tuchel believes the dramatic victory has strengthened his squad’s confidence and reinforced the belief that they are capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
He stressed that knockout football is ultimately about finding ways to survive difficult moments, even when circumstances appear to be working against a team.
Tuchel Praises England’s Character and Resilience
Beyond the refereeing debate, Tuchel reserved special praise for his players, highlighting their determination to keep fighting despite the setbacks they encountered during the match.
He said England repeatedly refused to let adversity derail their performance and credited the squad’s resilience as the foundation of the victory.
According to the manager, the team’s belief continues to grow with every challenge overcome, and he insisted the focus remains on progressing one match at a time as England chase World Cup glory.
Tuchel concluded that the spirit shown against Mexico demonstrated the togetherness within the squad, describing it as a group with outstanding character that continues to respond positively whenever the pressure is at its highest.
