In a heartfelt revelation on This Morning, Deidre Sanders opened up about her ongoing struggle with breast cancer, disclosing that it has returned.
The beloved agony aunt, now 79, first shared her diagnosis with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in September 2022.
After a period of recovery, she recently learned that the cancer had reemerged.
Thankfully, this time around, Deidre experienced no symptoms or lumps, catching the disease early during a routine mammogram.
Treatment Plan and Positive Outlook
Deidre shared her treatment plan, which includes a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy.
In a conversation with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, she expressed gratitude for her situation, stating, “I feel lucky because it could have been so much worse.”
She explained, “Unfortunately, I’ve got to have a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy, but it’s been caught early, and the treatment is happening very rapidly. I think I am so lucky. It could be so much worse.”
Reflecting on her experience, Deidre noted that her initial symptoms were not related to her cancer.
An attentive GP guided her through the cancer pathway, leading to swift checks and treatment.
“I felt well, I haven’t felt tired or run down. It’s very tiny, so there’s nothing to feel. It’s purely down to the mammogram which showed it up. I had an ultrasound and a biopsy, and it revealed it was cancer,” she explained.
Advocating for Mammograms
Deidre expressed her shock upon receiving the diagnosis and is now encouraging other women to prioritize their health by requesting mammograms.
Currently, the NHS does not automatically offer mammograms to women over 70, but they can be requested.
Reflecting on her own journey, she revealed that she missed out on mammograms for a decade.
“I hadn’t had a mammogram since I was 67, so ten years had gone by. I didn’t give it a thought,” she shared.
Now, she passionately advocates for women over 70 to get annual mammograms.
“Please, if you’re a woman over 70, request your mammogram. The reason I’ve had an easy time this time and last time is because it was caught so early,” Deidre urged.
Support from Viewers and Colleagues
Later on the show, Deidre displayed her strength as she took calls from viewers with health concerns.
One caller, Vicky, shared her worries about how her cancer diagnosis affected her children, who feared for her life during appointments.
Deidre offered kind advice, suggesting Vicky bring her children to the GP appointments to help ease their anxiety.
Following her appearance, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their support.
One user wrote, “Wishing you all the best, Deidre,” while another declared, “Deidre, you are a lioness! You’ll get through this; we love you.”
In September 2022, she had expressed her hopes for destigmatizing the word “cancer,” emphasizing that fear often prevents people from seeking medical help.
Reflecting on her experience at the breast clinic, she stated, “The breast clinic I have been attending is so kind and caring; they have been so lovely. That is very reassuring.”
Just a month after her initial diagnosis, she announced that she had been given the all-clear, sharing her relief: “I had this teeny, tiny cancer, which was spotted on a mammogram. I’ve had surgery, it’s all out, it’s gone.”
This Morning continues to air weekdays at 10 a.m. on ITV1 and ITVX, providing a platform for discussions on health and well-being.
