Thando Buthelezi Opens Up About His Loan Move to Richards Bay FC as He Aims to Establish Himself in the Betway Premiership

Thando Buthelezi, currently on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, has shared his thoughts about his new chapter at Richards Bay FC for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

The 21-year-old, a product of Sundowns’ DDC, is hopeful this move will provide the playing time he needs to make a strong impact in South Africa’s top league.

A Step Toward the Betway Premiership

Buthelezi’s loan to Richards Bay comes with the goal of giving him more on-field opportunities as he aims to make his mark in the Betway Premiership.

Having made his Sundowns debut in the 2022/23 season, his time on the pitch has been limited.

His only appearance came in a 12-minute cameo during Sundowns’ 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup.

Despite being promoted to the senior squad, Buthelezi has struggled to secure a regular spot, making this loan a crucial opportunity for his development.

Trust and Adjustment: A New Challenge

One of the standout aspects of his move to Richards Bay is the trust he has received from head coach Brandon Truter.

Buthelezi is eager to fit into the team’s tactical setup and make a lasting impression.

“The coach trusts me, but obviously, I have to adjust to the style of play at Richards Bay because this is where I am right now,” said Buthelezi.

“I must play the way they want me to play. If the chance to play comes up, I have to show up.”

For Buthelezi, earning a regular spot in the starting lineup is key to his ambition of returning to Sundowns as a more refined player.

Hoping for More Game Time

The young midfielder has expressed his gratitude for the support from Coach Truter, emphasizing how important it is to feel valued while away from his parent club.

“He’s [Truter] pushing me a lot because as much as I left home, there’s someone who trusts me and admires the way I play,” Buthelezi noted.

“I just hope that I get more minutes so that I can go back home.”

So far, Buthelezi has made three appearances for Richards Bay – two in the Betway Premiership and one in the Carling Knockout Cup.

He has started two of these matches and appeared as a substitute in the other.

His next goal is to continue gaining experience and impress with every opportunity
