Juggling life as a top tennis pro while preparing for a wedding isn’t exactly a walk in the park—just ask Alex de Minaur.
The Australian tennis star recently opened up about the behind-the-scenes chaos of planning his upcoming wedding with fiancée Katie Boulter.
While their love story has captured the hearts of tennis fans around the world, it turns out organizing the big day is proving to be even tougher than a Grand Slam match.
Engaged, Excited, and Slightly Overwhelmed
De Minaur and Boulter, who first began dating back in March 2020, shared the news of their engagement in December, just before the Australian Open.
A sweet selfie posted on social media showcased the British tennis star proudly showing off her sparkling engagement ring, confirming that wedding bells were definitely on the horizon.
Now, with Wimbledon fast approaching, De Minaur sat down with the BBC during the Queen’s Club Championships and gave a candid update on how wedding preparations are going.
Spoiler alert: he’s not calling the shots.
“Way Harder Than Tennis!”
When asked how the planning was progressing, De Minaur didn’t hesitate to express just how intense it’s been.
“That’s the hardest job out there,” he said with a laugh, admitting it feels far more stressful than his matches on court.
“Way harder than playing tennis at the moment,” he joked.
Though he would like to believe he has a say in the planning process, De Minaur humorously added, “At least I think I do… that might not be 100%.”
As for the wedding date? They’re aiming for sometime next year.
Joking About the Cost of Love
Back in January, De Minaur cracked a few lighthearted jokes during the Australian Open about the financial pressure that comes with throwing a big wedding.
“When I’m on court and you see me stressed out, I’m just thinking about the wedding budget,” he quipped.
“That’s why I’m like, ‘I need to win more matches!’”
Clearly, even top athletes aren’t immune to the realities of wedding expenses.
How It All Started: A 6AM Coffee
Their love story didn’t begin with glitz or glamour.
Instead, it was a quiet, early morning coffee that sparked something special.
Boulter once recalled to The Age that she met De Minaur around 6am while grabbing coffee, and something just clicked.
“From that moment, I knew I was in it for the long haul,” she said.
Since then, their bond has only strengthened.
Fans often spot the two supporting each other courtside, and their public affection has made them a favorite couple on the tennis circuit.
Standing Up Against Online Abuse
While wedding excitement fills one side of their lives, the couple is also dealing with something far more serious.
Earlier this week, Boulter spoke out in an emotional BBC interview about the relentless abuse she receives online—mostly from angry gamblers.
Some of the messages were chilling, including one urging her to buy “candles and a coffin” for her family, and another referencing her grandmother’s grave in a horrifying threat.
Boulter admitted she often wonders about the kind of person who would write such things.
“It’s just an awful, awful thing to say to anyone. It’s horrible,” she said.
“You really don’t know if this person is on site or knows where you live. That’s the scariest part.”
Alex De Minaur Demands Accountability
De Minaur didn’t stay silent about the abuse his fiancée faces.
Praising her bravery, he called for action against the people responsible.
“It’s great for her to speak up and shine a light on this,” he said.
“It’s something every tennis player—and every athlete, really—has had to deal with.”
He stressed that while many have raised the issue, very little has changed, and it’s time to hold those behind the threats accountable.
What’s Next?
With Wimbledon just around the corner and a wedding in the works, De Minaur and Boulter have a busy road ahead.
Between love, tennis, and the fight against online abuse, they continue to show strength both on and off the court.
Fans will no doubt be cheering for them—not just during matches, but as they build a future together.
