As the Paris 2024 Olympics draws near, Team GB has revealed its flagbearers for the highly anticipated Opening Ceremony.
Scheduled for this Friday at 6:30 pm GMT, the ceremony will take place along the River Seine, marking a historic first by moving away from traditional stadium venues.
This year’s Opening Ceremony promises to be a unique spectacle.
For the first time in Olympic history, athletes will parade down the iconic River Seine, passing by Paris’s famed Eiffel Tower.
The ceremony is set to blend the grandeur of the city’s landmarks with the Olympic spirit, offering a fresh take on the traditional event.
Carrying the Union Flag is a prestigious honor, and the selected athletes will join a distinguished roster of British Olympic legends.
Past flagbearers include Sir Chris Hoy, Katie Howey, Andy Murray, and Sir Matthew Pinsent, each of whom has left a lasting mark on British Olympic history.
This year, diver Tom Daley and rower Helen Glover have been chosen to represent Great Britain.
With a combined total of three Olympic gold medals between them, Daley and Glover will lead the British team down the Seine in a flotilla procession.
Daley, competing in his fifth Olympics, expressed his excitement: “Being asked to be a flag bearer is one of the greatest honors in my career.
If my dad were here, he’d be incredibly proud. He always said that being a flag bearer was a sign of an Olympic legacy.”
Glover, who is rowing in her fourth Olympics, shared her thoughts: “This is probably the biggest honor of my life.
I still can’t believe that I am not only an Olympian but also a flag bearer, making history.”
Special Moments and Achievements
Daley, who debuted at the Beijing 2008 Games at just 14, has accumulated four Olympic medals, including one gold and three bronzes.
He will compete in the 10-meter synchronized platform event with partner Noah Williams.
Glover, who has previously won gold in the coxless pair at London 2012 and Rio 2016, is aiming to become the first British mother to win a rowing medal.
She balances her Olympic career with raising her three children—six-year-old Logan and four-year-old twins Kit and Bo.
Looking Ahead
The flagbearers will board a boat for their procession along the River Seine before disembarking at La Place du Trocadero, directly across from the Eiffel Tower, where the official opening will unfold.
Team GB’s flagbearers for previous Summer Games include:
– 2000: Matthew Pinsent (Rowing)
– 2004: Katie Howey (Judo)
– 2008: Mark Foster (Swimming)
– 2012: Chris Hoy (Cycling)
– 2016: Andy Murray (Tennis)
– 2020: Hannah Mills (Sailing) & Moe Sbihi (Rowing)
As Team GB prepares for the grand opening, the anticipation builds for what promises to be a spectacular celebration of sport and tradition.
