Surge in Ballistic Missile Strikes Hits Russia Amid Drone Attacks and Increased Threats

Reports of ballistic missiles striking Russia have surged, following a series of drone strikes on Moscow in recent weeks, as revealed by British defense chiefs.

In its latest intelligence update, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlighted that Russia’s Aerospace Forces (VKS) are facing significant pressure to enhance air defenses over western Russia due to the expanded range of threats.

The MoD’s report emphasized the strategic importance of strikes deep within Russia.

It pointed out that President Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was likely based on the assumption that the conflict would have minimal direct consequences for Russians.

The utilization of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (drones) to target Moscow has become a recurring phenomenon.

Furthermore, there’s a growing number of reports detailing the deployment of SA-5 GAMMON missiles to strike Russian territory.

The SA-5 GAMMON missile, a Soviet-era weapon weighing 7.5 tons and measuring 11 meters in length, was originally retired from Ukraine’s air defense inventory.

However, it is now apparently being repurposed as a ground attack ballistic missile.

The pressure to enhance Russia’s air defenses is anticipated to particularly affect VKS Chief of Staff, Colonel-General Viktor Afzalov.

Notably, VKS Commander-in-Chief General Sergei Surovikin is currently absent and suspected to have been detained in connection with the Wagner Group mutiny that transpired in June 2023.

These developments come on the heels of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s condemnation of Russia as a “terrorist state.”

This strong statement followed a missile strike that tragically resulted in the deaths of a six-year-old girl and six others.

The attack targeted the Taras Shevchenko Theatre and a church where religious holiday-goers had gathered in the city of Chernihiv, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

The destructive attack also left over 100 individuals injured.

Speaking during a visit to Sweden, President Zelensky expressed his grief, describing how the attack had transformed an ordinary Saturday into a day of pain and loss.
