As the Stormers gear up to face the Sale Sharks in their next Champions Cup game on 11 January, the Cape Town side is missing the dynamic presence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
Hopes were high for the young utility back to contribute to the team’s resurgence, but injuries have kept him on the sidelines for much of the season.
A Season Marked by Injuries
For Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the past few months have been a rollercoaster of setbacks.
A knee injury prevented him from joining the Springboks on their end-of-year tour, and his attempts to return to form with the Stormers have been plagued by disruptions.
Earlier in the season, he was forced off the field due to a concussion during a match against the Sharks in Durban.
Shortly afterward, a heavy tackle in a home game against the Lions saw him limp off the field in the 28th minute.
The Latest Setback
Most recently, Feinberg-Mngomezulu suffered a shoulder injury right from the kick-off during last weekend’s United Rugby Championship match against the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium.
Coach John Dobson reflected on the incident, admitting they might have pushed the young player too hard.
“We took him to the edge,” Dobson explained.
“When he first went down, I thought we had made a calamitous error as coaches.
He wanted to keep going, but in hindsight, we should have taken him off earlier.”
While the injury is not expected to keep him out long-term, the team has advised him to rest and allow the pain and swelling to subside.
If symptoms persist, an MRI scan may be required.
A Rising Star with Untapped Potential
Despite these challenges, Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s talent continues to draw attention.
The UK’s Daily Mail recently named him among the top 10 breakout rugby stars to watch in 2025, praising his skills and potential.
“What a name and what a talent,” wrote rugby journalist Alex Bywater.
“Feinberg-Mngomezulu just needs a run away from the treatment table.
His appearances in the 2024 Rugby Championship showed his immense value to the Springboks.”
Looking Ahead
As fans eagerly await his return, the Stormers must navigate upcoming challenges without one of their brightest prospects.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu remains a symbol of South Africa’s rugby future, and his ability to overcome these hurdles will undoubtedly shape his career trajectory.
