Stonewall, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group, is finding itself in a difficult financial situation, with a significant reliance on taxpayer money to cover its operating costs.
The charity has recently reported a deficit of over £800,000, and the group’s income has dropped sharply.
While its overall funds have dwindled, public grants have increased, raising concerns about the sustainability of taxpayer-funded support for the organization.
Declining Income and Growing Deficit
Stonewall’s financial report for 2023/24 reveals that the charity experienced a £858,461 deficit, a sharp increase from the £574,269 deficit of the previous year.
Its income fell from £7.7 million in 2022 to £6.9 million, while expenses also dropped from £8.3 million to £7.7 million.
Reserves fell significantly, dropping from £1.8 million to just £998,173. Stonewall has also seen a decline in donations and wills, as well as revenue from its Diversity Champions program, which supports schools and businesses in implementing LGBTQ+ inclusive policies.
Growing Dependence on Public Grants
Despite these financial struggles, Stonewall’s reliance on government grants has increased.
In the past year, the group received over £600,000 from public bodies, a rise from the previous year’s £572,868.
This includes grants from the Foreign Office, Scottish Government, Welsh Government, Arts Council Wales, and the Global Equality Fund, administered by the US State Department.
Stonewall’s total income from government sources has thus surged, even though many public bodies have distanced themselves from the charity’s diversity rating schemes.
Challenges Amid Leadership Changes
Stonewall has also faced significant instability within its leadership.
Over the past two years, the organization has had three chief executives, a new treasurer who resigned within three months, and a high turnover in its board members.
This constant churn in leadership has raised concerns, with critics arguing that Stonewall’s internal turmoil is a reflection of the broader challenges facing the organization.
Women’s rights campaigners have specifically pointed to Stonewall’s handling of trans rights as a major point of contention.
Controversy Surrounding Trans Rights and Gender Politics
The charity’s stance on trans rights has led to controversy and criticism, especially its failure to acknowledge the complexities of gender and sex-based rights.
Maya Forstater, CEO of the human rights organization Sex Matters, pointed out that Stonewall’s refusal to engage in debates around sex-based rights and its aggressive stance on trans issues have alienated many who once supported the organization.
Critics argue that this rigid approach has caused Stonewall to drift away from its original mission and led to a loss of support from businesses and public institutions.
Stonewall’s Defense and Future Outlook
In response to the criticism, a Stonewall spokesperson acknowledged that many charities, including theirs, have struggled financially due to the economic downturn and the impacts of Covid.
The spokesperson also emphasized the continued importance of Stonewall’s work in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, especially as such rights face setbacks globally.
The organization remains hopeful that as the fight for LGBTQ+ equality intensifies, its financial support will grow.
Despite the ongoing struggles, Stonewall is focused on the future and is confident that public support will increase as more people rally against the suppression of LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.
