…By Judah Olanisebee for TDPel Media. BBC One is set to air a new Welsh-made true crime drama, Steeltown Murders, in May.
Written by Ed Whitmore, known for Manhunt and Rillington Place, the series will focus on how three murders in south Wales were solved almost 30 years after they were committed.
Steeltown Murders will follow two timelines: the 1970s and early 2000s.
It was made by Severn Screen, the production company behind Hidden/Craith and The Pembrokeshire Murders.
The series stars Philip Glenister, who played DCI Paul Bethell, and Steffan Rhodri as Phil ‘Bach’ Rees.
The drama will air on BBC One on 15 May at 9 pm, and all four episodes will be available to stream on iPlayer after the first episode airs.
The drama tells the story of how pioneering DNA evidence was used to solve the murder of three young women in the Port Talbot area.
The first documented serial killer in Wales committed the murders.
The drama was filmed in and around Port Talbot, using the M4 corridor, including Port Talbot, Burry Port, Llandarcy, and the Neath Valley.
The show’s makers worked with the actual police who were on the case with Paul Bethell and Phil Rees.
They were there in the 1970s and in the early 2000s when Operation Magnum, the name of the operation that reopened the cases, started.
The forensic-level research done into the project shows how developments in DNA helped answer the question of who murdered Pauline and Geraldine and Sandra three decades later.
Lead star Philip Glenister said that he played the scenes and script as truthfully and as best to his ability, as the script was so well constructed by Ed Whitmore.
Steffan Rhodri, who plays Phil ‘Bach’ Rees, will also feature in the drama, alongside Keith Allen, Priyanga Burford, Sharon Morgan, Nia Roberts, Amy Morgan, Matthew Gravelle, Gareth John Bale, Elinor Crawley, Kriss Dosanjh, Oliver Ryan, and Dyfan Dwyfor.
The four-part miniseries was written by Ed Whitmore and made by Severn Screen.
