It looks like Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s attempt to remove her father’s last name from her legal identity has hit a snag. According to her attorney, the court hearing for her name change has been postponed due to a clerical error.
Shiloh, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday on May 27, has been in the spotlight as she seeks to drop “Pitt” from her last name. Her parents, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, are both high-profile figures, with Jolie being 49 and Pitt, 60.
This legal move comes after Shiloh’s intention to change her name became public.
Peter Levine, Shiloh’s lawyer, provided an update to People on Monday.
He explained, “Unfortunately, the court was unable to complete the background check ahead of today’s hearing, so the hearing was rescheduled for August 19.” Levine clarified that a background check is a necessary part of the name-change process, and a clerical error caused the delay.
Jolie and Pitt, who split in 2016, are parents to six children: Maddox, Zahara, Pax, Knox, and Vivienne.
The former couple has been working through their divorce for the past eight years.
A source close to Pitt revealed to People in June that the actor was “aware and upset” about Shiloh’s decision to drop his last name, highlighting the emotional toll it has taken on him.
Earlier this month, Shiloh made her intent official by publishing a statement in the Los Angeles Times, announcing her wish to change her legal name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
This move is in line with state law, which requires a legal form to be published in a newspaper a month prior to a judge’s approval.
Legal and Personal Context
An insider shared with Dailymail.com that Shiloh, who reportedly hired and paid for her own lawyer, has made this decision independently. The insider suggested that Shiloh’s choice might be linked to past issues, including allegations of abuse by Pitt.
According to a 2022 FBI report, Jolie had accused Pitt of physical abuse during a 2016 flight.
The Jolie-Pitt Relationship
Pitt and Jolie’s relationship began after Pitt’s divorce from Jennifer Aniston in 2005.
They had several children before getting engaged in 2012 and marrying in 2014.
Jolie, known for films like *Maleficent* and *Girl, Interrupted*, filed for divorce in 2016, and both she and Pitt were legally single by 2019. Pitt, known for *Fight Club* and *Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood*, has been linked romantically with jewelry designer Ines de Ramon since 2022.
