Senior Police Officer Bas Javid Appointed Director-General of Immigration Enforcement

Bas Javid, a senior police officer and the brother of former home secretary Sajid Javid, has been selected to lead as the director-general of Immigration Enforcement at the Home Office.

Presently serving as a Deputy Assistant Commissioner within the Metropolitan Police, Mr. Javid has previously held pivotal roles within Avon and Somerset Police as well as West Midlands Police.

Commencing his new position in November, his responsibilities will encompass managing the operational response to immigration-related offenses, collaborating closely with various law enforcement entities such as the police and Border Force.

Focused Mission to Safeguard UK Immigration System

In response to his appointment, Mr. Javid expressed his honor at being chosen for this vital role, emphasizing the significance of preserving the integrity of the UK’s immigration system.

He eagerly anticipates leading a team of dedicated public servants who will work tirelessly to uphold the country’s rules and laws in this domain.

Stepping Up Efforts Against Immigration Offenses

The Home Office highlighted that immigration enforcement visits have surged to their highest point since 2019, marking an increase of nearly 50% compared to the previous year.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, is resolute in her stance against immigration abuse and is determined to vigorously combat such illegal activities.

She believes Mr. Javid’s extensive experience in law enforcement will further enhance their efforts to address immigration offenses, aligning with the expectations of the British people.

Welcoming the Appointment for Targeted Action

Sir Matthew Rycroft, the permanent secretary of the Home Office, expressed his enthusiasm for Mr. Javid’s appointment.

He anticipates a collaborative effort to tackle illegal migration, which is regarded as the department’s foremost priority.

Mr. Javid’s distinguished role as Deputy Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan Police involves overseeing critical operational areas, contributing to strategic decision-making, and occupying a pivotal position within the chain of command.

Amidst the Challenge of Channel Crossings

Mr. Javid’s appointment coincides with a significant influx of new arrivals making Channel crossings.

Data analysis from the PA news agency, utilizing government figures since January 1, 2018, revealed that nearly 100,000 individuals have arrived in the UK through this route.

RNLI lifeboats were observed bringing dozens of individuals to shore, possibly pushing the total number of arrivals beyond the 100,000 mark.

As per an eyewitness account, more than 40 individuals were brought ashore using two lifeboats, which had responded to a dinghy in the Channel.

This continued surge in arrivals highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing immigration-related issues.
