Sam Thompson has recently opened up about his split from girlfriend Zara McDermott, hinting that he might not be the one to blame for their breakup.
The couple, who had been together for five years, broke up in December 2024, with Zara, 28, confirming that she’s since moved out of their Chelsea home.
Sam, 32, addressed their separation publicly for the first time during an appearance on Love Island’s Morning After podcast.
Sam on Family Influence and Breakups
When asked if he would date someone his family disliked, Sam didn’t hesitate to reply, “Absolutely not.”
He explained that his close relationship with his sister, Louise (who also stars on Made in Chelsea), made it crucial for him to find a girlfriend who gets along with her.
“I live next to my sister and I’m very lucky she has liked all my girlfriends,” Sam said.
However, he added that when things don’t go well in his relationships, his sister tends to assume it’s his fault. “Most of the time when we break up, it’s my fault in my sister’s eyes,” Sam shared, with a laugh.
“My sister will look at me and go, ‘what have you done?’ every time.”
Pete Wicks and the ‘Crying’ Joke
Sam’s friend and fellow podcast host, Pete Wicks, couldn’t resist poking fun at Sam’s emotional reaction to the breakup.
On their Staying Relevant podcast, Pete joked about Sam’s tearful moments over Zara. “Sam’s mostly been crying,” Pete quipped, referring to Sam’s recent struggles.
He continued with another joke, adding that Sam was wearing glasses on the podcast because of his “staying relevant moments.”
Sam, visibly uncomfortable, awkwardly laughed off the comment.
The Awkward TV Appearance After the Split
The conversation shifted to a bizarre TV moment that Sam and Zara had filmed before their split—an appearance on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, which aired just weeks after their breakup.
The couple participated in the infamous Midnight Gameshow skit, where they were surprised by Michael and his crew while in bed.
Sam explained that the filming happened “a while ago,” adding that it was “one hell of a week.” Pete quipped that Sam’s discomfort might have been due to the awkwardness of appearing on TV just after the breakup.
Michael McIntyre had revealed that the skit almost didn’t happen because Sam and Zara had locked their bedroom door when the crew arrived.
Eventually, they opened the door, and the couple was filmed sitting in bed, answering questions from Love Island stars, who were holding custard pies.
Sam Reflects on the Difficult Breakup
During the podcast, Sam admitted that it had been a “tough month” for him, dealing with the emotional fallout from the breakup. “It’s been a tough month.
A real tough month,” he said, showing just how much the split has affected him.
Despite the difficulties, Sam also expressed how hard it was to watch himself and Zara on the TV show after their relationship had ended.
Zara Confirms She Has Moved Out
Meanwhile, just hours before the podcast episode aired, Zara appeared to confirm that she had indeed moved out of the home she once shared with Sam.
She posted a TikTok showing her busy day, subtly hinting at her new chapter without Sam.
The Beginning of Sam and Zara’s Relationship
Sam and Zara’s relationship started in 2019 after Sam reached out to her on Instagram.
Their love story was filled with public moments on reality TV, and they became one of the most talked-about couples on Made in Chelsea.
However, it seems their fairy tale romance has come to an end, leaving both fans and the couple themselves reflecting on the past and their future.
This breakup, although public, is clearly still very raw for Sam, and his openness on the podcast shows just how much it’s affecting him.
As both move on, it seems like a new chapter is beginning for them both.
