Retired ICT officer Jim Orwin, 67, has become the center of a legal storm after his decision to use “AdultHumanMale” in his email signature, leading to his dismissal from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Despite facing a £12,000 legal bill and using his retirement savings to cover the costs, Orwin remains unwavering in his stance, stating, “I would do it again.”
A Personal Belief Over Professional Pressure
Jim Orwin, who joined the council in 2018, was suspended and ultimately fired in 2022 after using the email footer “XYchromosomeGuy/AdultHumanMale” instead of the suggested gender pronouns.
The council had sent out a directive encouraging staff to add pronouns to their email signatures.
While most employees opted for the common “he/him” or “she/her,” Orwin’s choice of a self-styled, biologically grounded identifier sparked controversy.
In an exclusive interview, Orwin explained that adding pronouns was not mandatory but was presented as an option.
He believed the guidance was designed to encourage self-identification of gender, a stance he did not support.
Instead of using the offered pronouns, he selected “other” and entered his personal choice.
Conflict with the Council’s Policy
Orwin’s decision to resist the pronoun policy resulted in his suspension and later, his dismissal.
He took his case to a tribunal, arguing that he was discriminated against for his beliefs.
He was firm in his assertion that the council’s policy on pronouns was a political move designed to pressure employees into accepting a gender identity ideology he found problematic.
The tribunal panel, while dismissing his claims of discrimination, acknowledged that Orwin’s gender-critical beliefs were protected under the Equality Act 2010.
However, it ruled that the council’s actions were reasonable, and Orwin was ordered to pay £12,000 in legal costs.
A Retired Life with No Regrets
Now retired, Orwin enjoys time with his wife, Julie, and their seven grandchildren, but the financial burden of the legal costs still lingers.
He admits he will have to dip into his retirement savings to pay the bill but insists he would not change his decision.
“I regret losing my job, but if it happened again, I’d do the same thing,” he stated.
Orwin’s wife, Julie, expressed sadness over the situation, recalling how much he valued his job.
Yet, despite the personal and financial toll, Jim stands by his principles, believing that while everyone should live as they wish, no one should be forced to adopt an identity they don’t agree with.
His case has sparked wider discussions on the balance between personal beliefs and workplace policies surrounding gender identity.
While the tribunal dismissed his claims, the case remains a significant moment in the ongoing debate about freedom of expression versus inclusivity.
